I have a 1970 duster with a slant six and for awhile there was a hissing noise coming from it and now the car wont idle. when I turn the ignition it starts but as soon as I let go it dies instantly, I was playing around with the idle mixture screws when it started making the hissing noise could that be the reason it keeps dying? or could it be something else? any info will help. Thanks!

Check for a vacuum leak. Leave the ignition key at the on position grab a screw driver jump the power at the relay while Putting your hand over the top of the carb and see if it runs or idle s .

Thanks I’ll try that after work

Just clarifying, so i should completely cover the top of the carb and if it runs it’s a vacuum leak?

The engine starting then instantly stopping is a classic symptom of a bad ballast resistor. Just sayin.....
A carb hisses when idling with the air cleaner removed.

Yeah thats true. also a bad ecu box will also do that I would try this first

I got the car to fire up without doing anything, but every once in awile it wont start at all or it tries and dies after I release the key again. someone told me if the ballast resistor was bad it wouldn't start at all, is this true? is there anything else it could be? Thanks!

Spray carb cleaner in carb while running if the idle goes up you got a vacuum leak somewhere

if you have points check the condensor might be bad, if you have upgraded electronic ignition you might have a bad ecu. also get a new ballast

... someone told me if the ballast resistor was bad it wouldn't start at all, is this true? ...
No, "someone" is wrong. With a broken ballast, the engine will start and run w/ key in "crank", but will die the second the key switches to "run". That is because the ballast is bypassed in "crank". Many posts. To verify, jumper from BATT+ to coil+, but don't run long that way or your coil will overheat.
