Anybody Have a Soft Spot for TURBO Cars?

-
Awesome. Do you have a thread anywhere with details ? Would love to see the process.
I haven't put together a build thread of it, just posted some stuff on the Gen3 Hemi swap page and the SDAC page on facebook if you want to check those out. We started with a clean 34k original mile V6 auto car, and swapped in the 5.7 hemi based 392 stroker, the 6 speed trans, and an 08 Charger RT rear suspension. The goal was to make the car look as stock as possible, like if Chrysler and Shelby would have built it if the Gen3 Hemi was around in 1991.

I wondered who was building this with the amount of details that's put into it!

Still have a few things to do like finish up the A/C connections, Speedo wiring and tachometer wire. I'll also be taking it to get a dyno tune done once I've put some miles on it and work out any bugs that might pop up.

Nice execution. It looks like a factory deal. Please show more pix including how the trans tunnel and console was modded to suit.

Anybody here interested in an 87 lebaron turbo l automatic coupe with full glass cockpit and talking car feature? White with blue/gray leather interior. A trunk full of spare parts, and some other extras?

I also have a rear disc brake setup, and shelby spec springs and swaybars i can toss in for a bit more.

If interested , PM me, and i can send pix. I'm in west Texas. Car is rot hole free, clean title. Needs to be towed. Blown headgasket, could also use new rings. Antifreeze was drained out, and oil was flushed and replaced with fresh oil and filter, run for a couple minutes before parked. Car has been sitting prob 7 years now. I really need it to go.

Looks amazing, nice work! yeah please post any more photos you have. super inspiring, maybe give me hope of one day building a RWD hemi omni. hahaha

Yea the early ones has BAD torque steer. In 1988 they went to equal length axles and that helped a lot. My Sundance was a hand full from a dead stop but the Shelby wasn't to bad. Although It would smoke the tires off then wheel hop in first gear. Had to get a rolling start but man it would pull right up to 125 with no problem. Speedometer quit at 125 and I buried it many times. LOL Made some V8 Mustangs look stupid too :)
Actually the equal length axle setup came out in 1987 on the daytona shelby

Both of My '84 Laser XE's and an '85 Daytona Z parts car I had all have the intermediate shaft & support bearings with equal length half-shafts. The Turbo II units are much
beefier however, starting in '87 as You mentioned. These were all 5 spds., autos were a different matter..........................

a friend had a 84 i think it was exactly like this one. it would rip.. when ya dumped the clutch the tq steer would damn near want to break your wrists..

I had an ‘84 Laser like that but turd brown. You’re right. The torque steer was crazy in that thing! When it ran, it ran good! But it had so many faulty sensor issues on the engine. I’d keep replacing them and then another would fail or the same one would go out. But for a car that was built in ‘84, I was impressed that everything on the dash was completely digital. Had that annoying voice to remind you that you door is ajar and whatever else it had to say over and over and over. But it was still pretty cool.

I have had a few..87 Shelby Charger, 89 Shelby Daytona, 90 VNT Shadow ES, 91 Spirit R/T. Lots of fun!!! We used to do a lot of street racing back in the day, the VNT Shadow was never beat...not that is was that fast but with the VNT turbo I would launch out 3 or 4 lengths and has enough power to hold them off...should of seen the looks on all those mustang and camaro guys faces when they got beat by a Shadow...FREAKIN CLASSIC!!!

My first turbo car wasn't until I bought a 04 Srt4 neon, did upgrades like port polished heads, stage 3 BC cams, cam gears, 60-1 turbo, 4" turbo back exhaust side dump, Act 6 puck clutch with thier stronger fly wheel, supporting fuel mods, all with a mopar stage 2 kit and Diablo sport predator programmer. After all I sold it wanted another, now I have my 67 dart that has twin turbo build im doing.

Me with GLHS Omnis' and 87 shelby Z's and 89 CSX's and 92 Spirit R/T's. Oh yeah lets not for get the 89 Turbo Mini Van

I picked up an '89 Voyager 2.5 Turbo/auto drivetrain, harness & controller a few years ago. Destination has gotten GLH springs & the bigger-vented 4-stud brakes.........

Anybody want an 87 turbo l lebaron coupe with full digital dash, digital climate control, talking car feature and overhead console. It all works. Power seats, power windows power everything and illuminated entry with light up outside keyholes. This thing i parked w a popped headgasket about 10 years ago. However i drained the coolant, and drained the oil, flushed it out w cheap oil and filter letting it idle for about 5 mins, then dumping the oil n filter flush and adding clean oil and filter. I did this so nothing would rust inside while it sat. I rebuilt the turbo 25k ago, new injectors, water pump, rack, and a bunch o stuff. Upgraded to 88 roller cam. New timing tensioner, new timing belt. New walbro 190 LPH fuel pump. Got rid of automatic seatbelts. Modded the car, to install new factory mopar conventional seat belts in correct interior color, replaced headliner in correct color. West Texas car no floorboard, or trunk rot or rust through anywhere. Has minor surface rust on the roof. Easily removed w DA sander and 80-150 grit. Needs new rings as well as headgasket prob some other stuff from sitting. Comes with a spare radiator, and a trunk full of spare parts. Last pic shows the clean oil after the oil flush thats been in the crankcase since i parked it. PM me if your interested.

Heres pix.

CSXT is the one to look for. They were Thrifty rent a cars, rent a rocket. Kinda like when they did the GT350H for Hertz back in the 60s

Ironically, the CSX-T is the least valuable of the CSX series. '89 CSX-VNT being the most valuable, the '87 CSX second and the '88 CSX-T third. I've had both an '87 and and '88. Fun cars. Always wanted a CSX-VNT.

shelby won an SAE award for those fiber ride gold colored plastic wheels on the VNT too
I thought I wanted a set of those until I saw what happened to them if You get the brakes too hot!!!!!!

I had a couple of turbo Daytona's and Laser's back in the 90's. Love boost. Still gathering parts for my next twin turbo Hemi build someday.

Have a straight-axle '55 and a 354 Chrysler that is begging for a dual turbo set-up.........

My mom had the non turbo version of that car, just a LeBaron i guess. Had a nice stereo. I went through a water puddle pretty fast and the muffler ripped off the slip fit pipe. No muff, no problem. I just drove it home like that. Next day I found the problem and hammered the muffler back onto the pipe with a 2X4 and a mallet. she got the V6 FWD 5th avenue, that was a pretty nice car but the seats were way too tall, like sitting on a leather pillow.
