So what? They do it because it's the RULE, not the best option. There are guys on this forum who run into the 7's on 10 inch tires. The 60 foot times are slow compared to the 1/4 time and MPH. Those FAST cars would be much quicker if they didn't have to run that tire.
And the class is already shot to hell, because the big money moved in, exploited the rule book and ran the costs up. That's what racing is. Legislating stupid tire rules to control "costs" is just as stupid as 2 bbl rules, exhaust manifold rules and all those other idiotic rules.
