I have seen a number of slant six air cleaners pointed like this, especially when they have A/C

Is this a correct way some of them came or is that way off ??

Way off compared to my 74 the intake snout was right above the heat riser plate and a short tube.

I was looking at that no idea did some one mod that one? I think I still have the old 74 one if you want pics.

If You have a 2bbl Slanty air filter housing, they had a "flat" where they were adjacent to the A/C compressor, and the snorkle needs to be over the heated air stove for
the hose to attach to the heated air door assy. in the snorkle.

The snout should always point to the north, even when you are driving....

Have to wonder if it makes a difference which way the snorkel points. Most OEM did suck up the battery vapors.

That one pictured is 180 degrees out.
Look at how long the hose is to the air cleaner heat riser from the exhaust manifold.
It should be 8 inches or so if in the right location.........

The air cleaner points to the right rear corner of the engine bay like this on '73 A-bodies with factory A/C, and possibly a few other years. The air cleaner housing is specific to these models.

How about non-A/C cars with an air pump.........

I went in the FPC to look, and 'scuze me, I misremembered before: it wasn't A/C cars, it was '73 A-bodies with power disc brakes that got the air cleaner that pointed toward the right-rear corner of the engine bay, and also '73 B-bodies with Slant-6 engine, power disc brakes, and manual transmission.

All other '73 A- and B-body Slant-6 installs got the air cleaner with the snorkel pointing more or less at the battery in the left front corner of the engine bay.

This is not the only year there were differences like this; in '72 the \6 A-bodies with power brakes got a different air cleaner housing than all others, though it's not the same as either of the '73 units. The '71 cars are claimed all to use the same housing as '72 with power brakes and '73 except with power discs—there's a note in the '70-'71 FPC to change the air cleaner body to [the one with the snorkel pointing to the right rear corner of the engine bay] with field-installed power brake booster.

This game came to an end for '74: one air cleaner body for all applications. Same year the snorkel was changed from rectangular to oval.

the car in the pic is a 72

the car in the pic is a 72
The problem there is unless that's a C.A.R.B. equipped '72, (& it very well might be), that's not the original engine set-up for a '72. Having an air-pump & the required tube,
diverter-valve, vacuum controls incl. thermal switches, and matching head/exh. I don't think existed then,..even for Commiefornia...........

'72 was the first year for the air pump ("smog pump") on Slant-6s, only in California, so yeah, this looks like a California '72 (with power disc brakes, which explains the air cleaner). That would mean it also has the godawful no-valve EGR system: a hole in the floor of the intake manifold that admits exhaust to the intake tract 100% of the time. While cranking, while idling, while cold, all the time. Requires high idle speed and causes rotten driveability. The car will run a whole lot better if you remove the carb, unscrew the floor jet from the manifold floor, and replace it with a correct-size plug.

Hi Guys , another question about air cleaners , I am thinking of putting the original " cake tins " on my slant - 65 , 225 , 1920 holley's . Do you think it is breathing better with the ones that are on it ?

The stock '63-'68 air cleaners (the "small and tall" 8-inch units) will do everything better than those mini little chrome things. Better aiflow and better filtration are the betters you care about; less intake noise you probably don't.

Real nice engine bay there. Just one thing: it looks like you've got your PCV and your power brake vacuum hose tied in together. You shouldn't.

I think He knows.....:)
Pulled the valve cover today anyone ever see this stuff?

Thanks Dan , Yes it is a picture from when I got the car , It is all changed now , I didn't have a picture with the air cleaners on , I found out the hard way that the intake didn't have holes in it to line up with the vacuum holes in the bottom of the 1920 's , so the engine had no working pcv before I got it. this is the valve cover.
