I have a 8.25 rear end and just discovered it has a bad pinion bearing. It currently has 2.71 gears, open diff, something I was planning on changing when I got the resources to, but now this bearing is going out if I'm taking it apart to change the bearing I might as well go ahead give it some better gears. Not looking for anything in particular, just anything in good shape, the higher the ratio the better. Bonus points if it's a locker.

Go grab a trak lock out of a jeep dana 35, prob get it and a decent set of gears for 200.

Before you get a set of 2.94 or 3.21 gears for your 8 1/4, you should double check that those gears will fit in your 2.71 carrier. I know the 2.45 gears use a different carrier meaning 2.94 and 3.21’s won’t fit. I’m not sure if 2.71 uses the same size carrier as the 2.94 or the 2.45 though.

Also, is your 8 1/4 originally out of an A body? If you don’t know, it might be out of a newer Jeep? The spline count changed in 1997 from 27 to 29.
