Slick shifted a833 on the street?

-
Could only downshift mine when at a complete stop, could only upshift mine at full throttle. No street driving for me under those conditions. Well, I guess I could have driven around all day in first gear, but not very practical with a 4.56 ring and pinion.
P.S. This is what was known as a crash box, not sure about all of the details.

I do it all the time and have for years.

The best thing to do is grind every other tooth off of the syncros and put them back in. That's how I do it. Shifts up and down like it has syncros. Because it does.

Cool, I have to see if it still has the syncro's in it, I know the sliders have been modified. How good does it power shift?

my liberty equalizer a833 and 4.56 spool street and strip for 30 years like warm butter.

Ran mine in the BEE back in the day on the steet with RamRod and 4.56 with no issue. Had a line loc on the T. Never had downshift issues that I rembember as it had New syncros. Very Little clutch usage after start from dead stopped.

You mean you could power shift it without the clutch?

Absolutely! It worked for me but may not be for all. Basically every other tooth was shaved.

I would tap the clutch very lightly going down, but just slammed through the gears with the ramrod going up after launch.

You could downshift without the clutch with some throttle action, but I usually just half heartily tapped it while downshifting. Funnest ride I ever had and dearly miss it.

If I may jump in here... Interesting thread btw... Thank you.
Definition of the word Power Shift?
What do you mean really?
Does it only refer to shifting at full throttle?
I mean you can Power Shift with or without engaging the clutch as you feel fit…

Yes,by power shifting I mean WOT. I'm thinking, even if you have a slick shifted tyranny you would have to use clutch. My car came with one and I pulled it out because I wasn't sure how it was going to act but this year I want to put it back in and drive it on the street and beat up on it at the track I'm using a diaphragm clutch with a 6 panel ceramic disc the car is an x super Stacker has a Dana and Ladder bars

Paddle disc and super stocker

He does that elbow pump I think to try to curb the adrenaline. That's is why the race shifters had stops in them.

You cant powershift under load with out using the clutch. Try pulling your trany out of gear under throttle.

I Think I did what YR did;
I left the hubs alone. And only cut the sliders back enough to clear the clutch-teeth. And I cut every second clutch tooth off the gears. And I left the brass in there.
Best of both worlds. That was 2004, still works great, except I wore out the low brass in downshifting. (Yeah I gotta swap that out one of these days)
Drive it like a grampa around town.Or just treat it it normal. But when banging it hard,I can easily overpower the brass, and with double the room, catching the next gear is a breeze..
I only slick-shifted second and third, cuz with 3.55s, 7000 is 113 in third, and the GVOD increases that to 145,lol...... and then into 4-od, lol. Actually I think this car has never been over 135ish. And it cruises real nice up there.

Yeah I got to get the side cover off that thing like I say I know the sliders have been modified I'm not sure if the synchros are still in there or if they have been modified I'll have it out of the garage and on the bench in another day or so and let you guys know what's in there thank you so much for all your replies

If you can see brass the syncros are in there.

Can you post a picture?

Slick-shifted one of Mine, left all of the teeth & syncro-sleeve splines on 1st gear, took every-other off the rest. Drove it around no problems, You just have to be willing to
learn how to shift & double-clutch, after You do it's easy-peasy. I could still downshift into 1st moving, but You really have to be "on it" to do so cleanly. With 4.89's, I didn't
have the need to suddenly, LOL!
