okay guys...biggest pet peeve at car shows

-
My car is far from perfect. But to me it means the world to me. I could care less what people think at a car show!

The people who go to every damn car show every weekend in your area and get mad when they don't win a trophy, particularly the people that tell you how much money they spent "building" their car, and get pissy because they didn't win a trophy.

An extension of this is people who complain about judging. Perfect example, some asshole at a car show that my daughter and I went to last year complained loudly when he didn't get a trophy. The show was at a church and the youth group were the judges. And he made a stink about it. Get the f$$k over yourself!

nice car 72dart6pack and I could care less about getting a trophy don't know what I would do with it anyway. Iv'e had people come over to me in my old scamp when pumping gas and just want to admire my car and lots of times would take them for a ride, sure made there day and sometimes ended up with a good friend. I like to share my car with others. I really enjoy all the kids that want to climb on the drivers seat and stick there heads out the sun roof while there parents take there picture. Yea hard on the seat but as far as I'm concerned making people happy is more rewording than any trophy could ever be.

Fred, I also allow the kids to sit in the drivers seat and get their picture taken.

No sunroof to stick their head out though, lol.

hey 66fyssh glad to here that. Seeing the kids and there parents smile just makes my day better.

Well, my peeve happened Friday night.

I went to a BK car night with another FBBO member and his friend.

We had a procession of 71 RR, 72 SSP and my 73 Satellite. Pulled in and only got two spots separated by another friend in a 69 Satellite vert and a not seen before 73 340 Dart Sport.

A crowd gathered and those of us who wanted to get pics of the lineup waited patiently for it to clear.

After about 5 min all but a couple had moved away, and as those last two were finally shuffling off, me and another guy pulled out our cameras/phones and started framimg.

As soon as the frame was cleared, this doofus walks right by me, looks at my phone in front of my face, and walks over to oogle each car in turn, alternately looking at me and the other camera guy as we are sighing and tapping out toes.

Arggggggggggggggggggggggg.

sooo yy1 would like to see some pic's of your outing please

I would never put a "Do Not Touch" sign on any of my cars. Go ahead and touch them. If you ask, I will let you sit in it too.
She said purple is her favorite color so in she went!

she can set in my car any time she likes. ahhh never mind I'm to old for that young of a girl, but she sure is good looking. that made my day.

Only took a couple pics, but...

...after one of the cars beside me left, in pulls this rusty edsel.

Not complaining about the car, but...

...out piles 2 guys, a boy, a girl, a big husky looking dog, and an old lady.

All of them cram in between their car and mine, and the dog starts banging it's tail into my door.

No one stops it or moves it.

Then the old lady, trying to squeeze in between all of them while getting out of the car, slips and catches her balance, not on one of her crowd, but on my fender, dragging her handbag across it.

Then they prop the hood open with a 4x4 and wander off.

Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr.

Me too... They have a lot fun!

Very nice!

Last year, I went to a Cub Scout Pinewood Derby in Camden NJ. Mostly Hispanic and black boys and their families. I took the Barracuda convertible and when the kids came out to look at the muscle car, I let them sit in it. The parents couldn’t believe that anyone would let their kids sit in a car like that (it was far from perfect but they saw it as a super cool car). Some parents even recommended that I decline to allow THEIR kid(s) to sit in the car, but I said “NO”. Any kid that wanted to sit in it was welcome to do so. The kids were in love! They felt trusted like never before. They all were very respectful and careful while they were in the car. They were even patient to get behind the wheel. I was sorry that I wasn’t taking photos, but their parents took a ton of photos. We all should do whatever we can to pass on the love of our old cars. Give encouragement and express some respect and love to these kids. It will be well rewarded to you eventually. It may even help the kids become a better adult. I wish that race and skin color meant nothing in our nation. I love them all and I don’t understand why anyone can not love all kids. God bless them all!

The Dart Sport was a factory 340, A/C, fold down, sport hood car.

...and the owner, only the owner for a month, kept telling us that it wasn't a 340 car, but that the last owner "hot rodded it" to make it that way.

Despite us telling him about the VIN and fender tag numbers.

Really?

OK, time for my judging story...

This was 25 years ago... I had been a judge at a couple different car shows. Nothing big, just helped out, but I always tried very hard to do my job correctly and never had a complaint.

A guy I knew was having a show at a local restaurant and had done it for a couple years. Something got screwed up on his end and the guys that were supposed to judge were late. There was about 150 cars. I got asked to "help" and I would get a dinner out of the deal, so sure... Why not... I'd get things started and when the judges showed up, I would hand some of it off to them and help them finish up. There was only about 3 or 4 classes and a couple special trophies. About half way through, I realized I was going to be it... Nobody else showed... So I did my best and got it done the best I could.

Everything went fine.. I was working my tail off, but it went OK... One award was for a "spirit of the sixties" and the organizer told me "See the '59 Ford? Make sure he wins that". The car wasn't very nice, and I said "Huh?" and he explained that the owner was very sick with not a lot of time left to live and it was his (the owner) teenage kids that had finished the car. Of course I said "You got it!"

The guys and his kids were smiling ear to ear... and I could see him holding back his tears as he got his trophy. I felt really good about it.. Everybody clapped etc.

So.... All was good... I was picking up and headed in for my dinner when I got stopped by a guy that had taken a second place. He had a nice car, but there were nicer... and he didn't like how he didn't get first in his class. He was really ticked about the '59 Ford getting a "spirit of the 60's" award. He was OK at first and but didn't want to hear a word I had to say... So then he got loud... So I just started to walk away.. He started in again and I kept walking... He got even louder and started hurling personal insults... I still kept walking.. He was following me at that point. More insults... So I finally stopped and started to turn around.. I'd had enough. Then I heard his wife yell "Red! God damn it! That big guy is gonna kick your ***!" He stopped coming towards me and turned around and walked back to his car while I watched.. His wife said to me "He's such a dumb ***, I'm sorry".

Big-John woulda done the same thing glad to here you didn't kill the A hole.

Thanks! I never had any kids (except for a stepson for a while). My first job was in a home for crippled children (at the ripe old age of 15). It broke my heart to see innocent kids with so many disabilities. I loved them all and wished that I could have adopted all of them. It also broke my heart that their own families eventually stopped visiting them after just a short while. I pray that God sends people to help and love all the kids in the world!

I agree with letting the kids twist on the steering wheel also. Young smiles are what it is all about. BUT, I don't have a concourse car and I didn't spend the last 10 years restoring it these guys have a right to say look but don't touch. My cars are both 20 year old restorations with very nice paint. 5 footers at best and both are driven regularly. I would hate to see them scratched by a baby carriage or a belt buckle but dirty sneakers on the seat is no big deal.

You 'vert guys make sitting in a car like that at a car show or cruise-in soooooo much better!!!!!

That would be hard to deal with, sorry for your past. and I thought I had a bad life. mine was good compared to what you went through.

Yea I here what you are saying Shenango even my old paint means a lot to me. and if I had young kids at a car show I would make sure they were by my side there is nothing worse than parents that don't keep an eye on there kids. And I would never let all 8 of my kids go free in a car show or anywhere else. and that is more of a pet peeve to me than anything. Parents should discipline there kids. And most of the time I know what kids to let sit in my car. I can deal with a bad kid, but a bad parent I just want to slap them.
