74 Duster

Ya, a lot of stuff was just plain missing on this car when I bought it. Hood release cable for one. I bought a new one, but have no idea how it is routed ( from the hole in the firewall ? to the hood latch ). Also the 2 vacuum lines that run from the engine through the firewall to the heater / AC dash controls. Again, no idea where they go through the firewall hole ? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
I'l get you pictures of that this afternoon once I get home. It' a v8 car bit should be the same.

There is a hole below the ballast resistor for the hood latch cable. From there it follows the wiring on the inside of the inner fenderwell.

I didn't have the correct grommet for the A.C. vacuum lines but I drilled a hole near the heater hoses and the A.C. lines to run it out there. I could not find a spot where it would have come out from factory. I never took mine apart.

No problem! I had trouble with the same info when I did mine.

Moving right along - Engine compt is coming back together. Gotta bend up a hi side A/C line ( between the dryer and the expansion valve ), drain the compressor oil and change to "pag" oil for R134A, Install R134A hi and lo side charge ports. Dash is in and have to route my fresh wiring system. Heater box and wiper system were previously rebuilt and installed before I put the dash in.

Duster steering wheel. Cracks filled and painted black ( enamel ). Any suggestions on painting the center section black? Enamel paint will not work on it as it is rubber and enamel paint will not dry on rubber.

Any suggestions on painting the center section black?

I used Dupli Color Plastic and Vinyl paint. I picked it up at O'Reilly's.

Get the adhesion promoter as well.

Clean, clean and clean again, apply adhesion promoter and paint.

Good tip on the paint. Thanks. Worked great on my steering wheel center section and I will probably use it on some interior parts.

As I have said, this car was missing lots of parts, including the AC hi side wet line between the receiver dryer and the expansion valve. "Vintage air" sells AC lines with the fittings already on the ends in different lengths ( straight sticks). I was able to find a length that was close to what I needed and bent it up.

I am pretty sure the hard line goes thru the radiator support, instead of over it.

Finally got the dash in and working. Had to replace the voltage reg on the back of the printed circuit board for the gauges to work properly. Fixed some miner cracks on the steering wheel and painted it. New ignition switch and lock. New glove box from "Steel" Industries. New dash cap from Rock Auto. New speedo cable from NAPA ( plastic lock to back of speedo gauge was broken ). Still looking for a radio.

Did you ever figure out what the part /function is of the component that appears to say....emergency start /ignition key must be on. (attached picture)?

I was wondering the same thing.
Not for sure, but I think it was part of the way over complicated seat belt interlock system that came about in 74. Total cluster funk! My car won't have that system. I will be replacing it with " Hey, put you seat belt on!!":poke:

thanks for the answer.....my silver Hemi Duster is a 74 with the original factory engine harness. I removed the seat belt sensor but since I did not know what that was....left it. Unplugged it and nothing seems effected. I am thinking about removing it.

I had to rewire my entire car, so that exited stage left with a lot of other related stuff.

Just finished installing "Steel Products" insulation and head liner. Found that I am missing a left side sun visor mount. Got the visors, just need the left side mount - or whadayagot?

Moving right along on my "junkyard Duster" project. All glass ( save the door glass) is in along with trim, rug, package tray and speakers, tail lights, A/C plumbing, seat belts, trunk / seal/trunk floor mat, new tires, and rear side lights. Still looking for a Rt. side sail panel, Lt. side sun visor mount, door glass belt strips ( inners and outers ), inner and outer door handles, door arm rests, front seat foam and all seat covers. The light at the end of the tunnel is growing.

As I have said, many interior parts were missing when I snagged this car out of a Az junkyard. Got lots of help from many on this sight - Thank you! Still working on putting the interior together. Pic - What's missing here? Obviously, no finished corner. Also, does the rear window rubber molding by the head liner area go over the head liner or under it? Still looking for "A" pillar moldings and a Passenger side sail panel. Thanks again for everyone's help on this "Junkyard Duster" project.

Duster will be getting a new set of Addco anti-sway bars. 1 1/8 front and 3/4 rear. 74 Duster with a slant motor came with no sway bars.
