I acquired a new dart I am doing some things to so it can get back on the road. First issue I have is what the heck is wrong with the VIN and fender tag decoders? they are on drugs or something. Second - I just wanna say the guys at Chris Alstons CW are super helpful and know their stuff inside and out. Looking forward to leeching information - I mean learning. About my new mopar and its ins/outs.

Welcome, what issues are you having with your VIN and fender tag. What year Dart do you have?

Its a bright red 65 Dart 270 with a clutch pedal. Been a race car most its life and i got it needing some assembly. Ive uploaded the tag - ive tried 4 or 5 different sites and about 2% of it makes sense. According to one its a 119" plymouth. Another says dodge 880. Another says its a 273 2bbl but then another says 31 doesn't exist but 30 is the 273 2bbl. Its mind bogglin.

Makes more sense if it were a 66. A28 is a October 28 build date, 31 is 273 2bl, the 3 is 4 speed. Not sure what the second 5 is for.

Welcome aboard this great site :thumbsup: Jump on in and enjoy :)

Thanks for the welcomes! Yeah it's an odd one. Vin starts with 55A and i tried to input it to a decoder and it said invalid vin. Stuffs killin me. Oh well it's still gonna be awesome soon and im excited

Welcome and good morning. I will look through some of my decoding books and see what I can come up with.

Probably a dumb question, but why did they stamp "1234567890" and "ABCDEFGHJKLMNPQRSTVWXYZ" on those tags?

I was wondering the same thing... At first i was reading it... And saw everything stamped so i was like "hot damn its got every dang option" then realized it was generic stamping...

Ok Here ya go. All fender tags read from left to right starting from the bottom row. I will try to make the info like a chart to make it easier to understand.

SO = A28 = Production Date = October 28 1964
NUMBER = 06072 = Shipping order number
BDY = L32 = Body style = L - Dodge
3 - Dart 270
2 - 2 door hardtop
TRM = H1R = Trim = H-High line trim Bench seat
1-Cloth and Vinyl
R-Red
PNT = T = Paint = Medium Red Metallic
AB = 31 = Engine = HP 273-4 barrel
D = 3 = Transmission = 4 speed manual
E = 5 = Heater = Front heater with defrost

Production numbers known = 69185 1965 Dodge Dart 270 models with V-8

Cool car!

Thats incredible you guys can do that...

Its a beautiful car. An old salt from a local group of racers has had it sitting and the opportunity came for it to be let go and i had to jump. My buddy called and said "we will look at it saturday" and i said "no need, just bring the title lets roll". But i had to wait till Saturday - shook his hand, introduced myself, and said so wheres my new car. Haha.

I was driving a 78mm turbo 1uz Lexus LS400 and i got rear ended at 100mph while i was stopped waiting to turn - and thats what prompted them to offer me the car. One door closes i suppose

There might be further production figures around I can look for. Lots of 270 v-8 cars but not many HP 4 speed cars I bet. Post some pics when you can.

Its been sittin a long time - but i got these when i went to plot my pickin it from her garage. Old racers and their clutter :p

The plate pic you sent does not contain the VIN. Your VIN plate is attached to the lower drivers side door post, and should start with "L35...." if its a '65 Dart 270.....

The VIN i got off the core support though. We all went over the car and its all we found. Its all original panels though

Thats still not the VIN....its the Sales Order (SO) number. The VIN is on the door post tag. If you have the build sheet, it will be there also. VIN did not appear on the fender tag (which is the pic you posted) until 1967 model year.

Its 10 digits - starts with 55A - thats the sales order???
I don't know what is stamped on your core support (post a pic if you can), but the VIN of your car should start with "L35". Now if, at some point, someone has received a replacement VIN number (due to lost title, etc.), then the cars VIN could be anything.

Is there a tag on the drivers lower door hinge post? If so, that is your cars VIN.

This is what ive got on the car. Imma have to check my title here because its confusing

Not sure about the "55", but starting with "A28....", that's your SO number.

If you don't have the VIN tag on the drivers door hinge post, you need the broadcast sheet to tie it together....and if you don't have that, you're SOL.
