So I'm looking at getting a 4point harness/seat belt ...I have never done this before . What kinda mods do I need to make in order to do this??? ...does anyone prefer a specific brand??? Its going on a 74 duster with the half bucket half bench seat

Use the cheapest you can find "new". They expire in a couple of yrs. , and come w/ a simple set of instructions , no big deal.

I have a set with bucket seats and left the OE lap belts as well. (used the OE mount points on the floor for both)
This way I can use either belts if I wish.

One thing about harnesses is that you are supposed to have a mounting point for the upper belts toward the tops of the seats so they don't come down on your shoulders and possibly compress your spine in an accident.
This usually requires an added bar across the back at seat back height, or a cage.

Here's a crapload of images on that.

I was told that the reason 4,5 and 6 point harness are NOT DOT legal is folks just installing the shoulder bar or less.

With a 3 point belt in a roll over your body can compress down in the seat. With the full harness you are pinned to the seat so if you install the 4,5 or 6 point you need a full roll cage.

I can't say for sure if this is true or not, it' just what some one told me. I can tell you with my 5 points you can not move when your strapped in. If you don't close the door you un strap. No reaching over and rolling down the passenger window and when you build your dash you better test fit everything strapped in cuz you can' move to reach a switch that's just out of reach....

this may not help but you can use the factory belts if you are slower than 11:49 seconds . I agree with famous bob : use the cheapest belts that are SFI approved . anchor the lap belt at the factory location . the shoulder straps should be attached to the roll bar cross brace . Two ways to do this ; either weld tabs to the cross bar and attach shoulder harness to that or wrap around style to the cross bar . this depends upon which shoulder belts you purchase . I personally like the wrap around style . Hope this helps .

me too on the wrap around. I made a couple of alum clamps to keep them from sliding apart too far.

Schroth is about the only one that has DOT cert or claims to meet for street use. You'll have to ask about the mounting as the holes may be smaller than the seat belt anchor bolts for our cars. That said, some places don't allow 4 point harnesses at all. So whatever you are using it for, find out what the rules are first.

These work for me...RJS Equipment 4 point, pushbutton latch.
lap ends mount to stock locations, shoulders bolt to tab on rollbar
easy install and hold me comfortably snug in the seat.

I believe they are. I like them very much so far.
More comfortable than I expected and with the belts snugged up I feel very secure.
I'm 6-2+ and 205. They were comfortable when I was 245 too :steering:
