I’m trying to get my fuel pump working on my slant six. The ****** won’t pump gas and I’m getting irritated with the mechanical pump. I want to go to an electric pump, does anyone know how much fuel pressure I need for my 1 barrel carter (53A-450)? I can’t imagine it needs much. But I want to do this right

But I want to do this right

if you want to do it right, prove to yourself the problem really is the mechanical pump before you junk it
run a line from a gascan to the pump, to another gascan and crank her over for a few minutes
then see what type of output it has

you may find that one of your 50 year old fuel lines is clogged up
or that the tank is not venting properly

or the cam lobe is worn...

just went threw this on my D150! gonna need to pull tank and flush it out good and replace all lines with improved efi grade rubber line and new hard lines! mine still had all factory lines from tank all way to carb!! youd be surprised how new lines and a clean tank help it!!

how much fuel pressure I need
Pressure? 3 to 6 psi is all that's needed.
All it has to do is keep the bowl full - the carb bowl works just like a toilet tank ...

diymirage gave you a good way to test it. and as long as the bowl has fuel, it will even run for a minute or three.
There's a coarse sock filter in the fuel tank.
There's a finer can filter in line to the carb. Those will give you clues if there problems in the lines.

I tested the pump before and it was not delivering fuel; checked lines for clogs and nothing, I am going to assume it is the pump itself or it is the cam lobe. The pump is one of the sealed mechanical fuel pumps, so taking it apart won't happen. I am thinking my best solution is for electric pump. I just need to figure out how to wire it safely with a safety switch of some sort.
