if you want to do it right, prove to yourself the problem really is the mechanical pump before you junk it
run a line from a gascan to the pump, to another gascan and crank her over for a few minutes
then see what type of output it has
you may find that one of your 50 year old fuel lines is clogged up
or that the tank is not venting properly
