I agree you should be able to make it work. I've seen cars with cable setups but don't remember the details. Only one I helped with the issue was it touched the headers and no longer worked smooth.
If the distance the cable moves with the throttle is different than the distance moved at the transmission, it shouldn't be too hard to increase or decrease the length of the lever.
The shoe that connects to the lever is loose on the cable and is pulled by a stop on the end so there is hysteresis on there just like the stock fork except not in the carb end of the setup. I'm not sure if I need a return spring on the lever to pull it toward the rear, though.

I need fo figure out some sort of bracket under the car so I can start fiddling with it but since I can barely turn my head under there, working on it is a true PITA.
