It's not either/or, but many people use those words logic, reason, common sense to mean "According to my opinion" (no matter how well or poorly informed it might be).
That's not how it works—it really isn't. The EPA does not "make up environmental threats", though if you don't have the whole picture or know all the info, it might look, sound, or feel that way.
When our cars were new, this (in the attached pic) was considered perfectly acceptable with no consequences. Eventually scientists, including at the EPA, figured out this is a seriously awful thing to do, and laws were passed against it. People who had been doing it for years reacted the same way you just did: "What? Gimme a break, I've been doing it for years; this is a made-up threat by tree-hugging weenies."
