So I finally got to some of the blown dash wiring in my dart last night. (Its amazing what starts working when you strip out a VERY melted wire and replace the fuse. Right??? )

Anywways, this is the connector to the map light. The insulation is melted right to the connector so I can't just splice it on to some new wire. Do they still make these? If so what are they called? Or should I just crimp on some quick disconnects?

It looks like the black plastic piece is still OK so just poke out the old packard connectors and get a couple of new ones at your auto parts store. Then you can add wire to replace the damaged stuff and crimp/solder on the new connectors and stick 'em back into your connector.

You may have already done this, but I think your first question should be, "What caused this?" Something caused that wire to melt down. Unless you have figured out what happened, replacing that wire and plugging it back in may be another melt down (and possibly a fire) waiting to happen. Just looking out for your safety.

Should be able to pull the connectors out using a flat tool that fits in these slots to retract the retainer. Maybe a woman's hair pin will do it.

When I built wiring harness for Ferd we all had a 1/8" allen wrench that was ground down flat on one end, still have a few laying around when I have to replace connectors.

A female packard 56 2 way shell will work.

Napa/Carquest might have something that will work. I know that I have them and I'm over in Indio near Home Depot.

As Crackedback said, "packard 56" I have bought them from "Clips and fasteners" but I recently noticed the price went way up. You have to be careful to get the correct type. Some Mopar connectors the terminals MUST be wrapped around over the sides instead of folded over the top:

These over the top will NOT FIT some types of Mopar connectors

Usually you want this type, rolled in on the sides:

THANKS FOR ALL THE HELP GUYS!!!

yeah, as of now I don't know what happened. It was like that when I got the car. I'm thinking a bad ground? I cut out the entire circuit. It was the lines for the map and glove nox. I figured I would just replace the entire circuit, (can't hurt) and re-check.

Any other suggestions I get from the group are always appreciated. I have always loved tearing things down and putting them back together, but I'm never to the car game and I'm learning as I go.

Yeah. The hot runs through the cigar lighter then to the map light and glove box. I hadn't planned on it, but I could always run another line off the fuse box just for those two light. I have two empty slots.

Oh, and I had something small enough to get those wires out but the second I applied any amount of force the plastic just crumbled. Lol

So I've gotten a little deeper into that circuit, (Isn't that how it always happens) and I traced that melted wire back to where the time delay relay should be but isnt.

I'm newer to this, and this feels like a good excuse to get to know the car a little better. Plus I figure I'll get everything going, then decide what I want to "modernize."

Side note I know the map light, what's the courtesy light?

Have you done the alternator bypass yet?

For the work, I'd just replace the harness at this point.

Courtesy light is the dome lamp.

Yes. I agree. Everyone says Packard 56, but I saw the same thing on my original harnesses. The female terminals are like the lower one - contact is made by the rolled sides. Will see if I can find the proper name for these later - packard 56 female AFAIK has the leaf spring center as in your top photo.

The plastic housings are generally found under 'connectors'
A Packard 56, two terminal connector is what you'll need. If you're doing a super duper exact resto, then you may ned to hunt a used one or get picky about the new one. Otherwise, not too hard to get.

here's one source:

do pay attention to what the ammeter is doing, and don't wire accessories onto the charging circuit.
Understanding Charging Systems with Ammeter

Thanks for the resource. I took a real quick glance, and I've put it on my reading list (with a star to denote importance. . . .sorry I'm a nerd.) Luckily I've never really seen any spikes on the ammeter, but that may just be BECAUSE this circuit is already fried. I'll make sure to keep an eye on it once I get this circuit back up and running

Side note, I also stumbled across this article, Improved Wiring for older Mopars, and it too looks like a good idea.

The biggest pain in the a** of this whole thing is waiting for the right wiring to come in the mail. I really want to stick with original colors so my wiring diagrams are still accurate. Radio shack used to be my go to for wiring and local auto stores only ever seem to have red and black.

@RedFish, I've been looking at some modern equivalents. (The nos ones cost more than I'm motivated to spend on making the dome light stay on for a couple seconds, and . . . you know. . . they're old tech) do you know if the newer ones have the same issues?
