Finally getting to it!!! 1970 Duster 340

That's the plan. I told Steve that I want him to try and duplicate the orange peel effect of the original enamel. I'm as happy as a kid in a candy store.
 
I'm going with black stripes. This car was originally delete of side stripes and had vinyl trim. I just think that the vinyl side trim is just too plain Jane.
 
The black stripes will look good. My best friend in high school had a red 70 340 Duster that had white stripes from the factory. He had it repainted, and went with black stripes because it had black interior...and it looked good. I had a 70 Gold Duster that was FJ5 with gold stripes and a black vinyl top. I'm building a 70 Duster that will be FJ5 with a black vinyl roof, and a 5.7 Hemi with a 5 spd automatic. I'm torn on whether to replicate my old car and do gold stripes, or do black....which is what I'm leaning towards.

Some paint! That's just great Kevin, it's been such a long road for you but it won't be too long now and you'll be putting her back together. Are you using a single stage paint in the effort to match the original enamel? I ended up forgoing that kind of finish on mine since we have next to no choices of single stage paint anymore up here. Since I haven't sprayed any in decades I wasn't confident, being a metallic colour on mine, I wouldn't mess it up and single stage is a real bear to fix if I did. Can't wait to see it all painted.

I did decide to go with single stage paint to try and duplicate the appearance of enamel. Steve went with Glasurit that was matched to a 1970 paint chip chart. I almost forgot how red FE5 is. The previous paint on the car oxidized quickly. I think I waxed the car monthly to keep her shiny back when I had her on the road.
 
The Duster is looking nice Kevin! I will be getting down there maybe next week....so I hope to see the Duster all painted.

The nice thing is you can work with that paint later to get it as flat as you want, or not...

I realize the single stage is being regulated away but in PA it is still available. Even though today's paints aren't even close to the enamels of the 1970's, it will give me the look that I'm after along with better protection.
 
Work on the Duster is moving ahead.......although not as fast as I would like it to. Steve transported the car to Ohio last weekend. He is going to recruit a friend and his downdraft paint booth to help finish applying the rest of the FE5. Steve is doing his best to try and duplicate the factory finish to the best of his ability. It's not an easy task and he has wrestled with coming up with a strategy to get the job done. Here are some better pics of the underside showing the overspray pattern.

Thats awesome to finally see your car in color! Looks familiar! Looking forward to seeing it done and kudos for sticking with it!
 
I like it that you are trying to duplicate the orange peel. Most people will look at the car and say, oops you have some orange peel but the people in the know will get it. I also went with single stage and have a little orange peel but it was by accident, which was fine by me but had to explain it to my bow tie buddy. I love red cars and looking forward to seeing it totally painted. Later, David
 
Thanks David. Steve is giving me just what I want regarding the "look" I'm after. I talked to a couple high-end auto restoration shops in my area and explained what I was after. They both told me that they don't do orange peel. Everybody is entitled to their opinion but I don't want a smooth as glass look. I was only 9 years old in 1970 and didn't have a chance to buy a car like this from the dealer. My restoration will give me the closest experience that I will ever have to stepping back in time and picking up a new 1970 Duster 340 from the Plymouth dealership.
 
Looks great Kevin, I would like to restore mine some day, it’s almost identical to yours, it also came with the body side moldings originally and I changed it to black stripes

I talked with my painter yesterday about the exterior finish of the Duster. I originally decided that I wanted to duplicate the factory finish as much as possible including orange peel. The painter has worked on OE cars before including one that he did for himself. He feels that I will regret painting my car with an original crappy style finish. He feels that it will bother me over time and that most people who look at it will see it as a bad paint job rather than factory correct. I see his point and I can understand that a good painter probably doesn't want to be associated with something that most people see as poor quality. I just thought I would throw this out to the FABO crowd to see what opinions others might have about this isssue.
