Hi All,

I'm looking for hints on masking and painting the blacked out areas of '72 Demon headlight surrounds. The grille itself was easy enough, but the restricted access to some of these small areas on the surrounds have me scratching my head a bit.

How did you guys mask these areas off and get a factory like result??!!

Since the grill was originally black plastic I just masked off the black and painted the silver. All I can suggest is a LOT of patience, masking tape and very sharp knife to trim the tape.

A super small paint brush and a steady hand. Took me 1 week. A coulpe ribs at a time.

Zoom in on the small square on the left in the photo. I nailed it perfectly. Gloss black testers model paint is spot on.

Thanks gents :).

The factory clearly used a mask that they laid over these areas. I really want to spray this to maintain the consistent finish and color that I have on the center grille.....

Good luck is all I can offer if you wanna spray it. Yes I agree they had a template to spray it. That was over 45 yrs ago.

Just as bad. Take your time. Go slow. No rush. You can do better than factory. Before & after photos. I probably have 10 hrs in to just one headlight bezel. But the time paid off.

Seems to me like you're working too hard

Paint it black. Fill the low areas with non hardening putty, smoosh it to where it's level. Paint silver, let dry. Remove putty.

Maybe you can fill the captured areas with water, gently mist with silver, then drain?

There has to be a trick. I'm sure the factory had a jig that masked the silver.

I bought a cheap airbrush kit on ebay and did all the black on my grille with it. You can get into small spaces and it leaves an overspray similar to factory.

Is this why people swap to a '71 grille, or are they just as bad??!!

Just as bad so no, they just made a poor choice.:D
Sidemarker envy...so sad...:(

Looks like your patience is paying off.

Could be worse. You could have had to do a Sharktooth!!
