You know. Sometimes it could be just as simple as genetic mutation.
Take this cat for example. Its not alien. Just geniticaly different. 6 toes on every paw.

Sometimes it is...... but to have so many examples in more than one location?

In a way we are all the result of genetic mutation.... but I don't think that's a thorough enough explanation here
