at random times my car stalls from either not being warm or stalls because it use to have bad timing or carb tune.

anyways...

So not always but at random times rarely - the car wont turn over.
(wait it out and then it turns over and on)
i recently replaced the starter with the mini starter (GREATNESS) but something else seems to be failing at times... bad wire? bad ballast? a solenoid? regulator? hmmm
recently also replaced the positive battery cable

IDEAS?

Well if it normally runs good then it could only be fuel or fire?? I would carry a small 12V test light so that when it dies you can immediately check for current at the coil, ballast resistor, starter solenoid, distributor or anywhere else there should be power when the key is on. If something is failing you'll either have to let it fail or find a way to isolate it when it happens. At least you can eliminate a few things with a 12V test light.
Fuel - if you have a in-line fuel filter right before the carburetor you can check to see if it's full of fuel when the car won't start?? But you're saying it won't turn over so that narrows it down to "fire".

Sounds like two different issues, one is "stalling", the other is "No Start/ No crank". The stalling could be ignition, is it electronic? The no start could be ignition switch/relay. try jumping the ignition relay when it wont crank, this will eliminate from the relay down to the starter.

Neutral start switch. Unless it a manual, then i’m way off.

First thing I would check is ALL contact points both positive and negative (ALL of your grounds).
That's a good idea but if it's a loose connection or a ground he won't know if he's fixed the problem until he's driven around for a long time to see if it dies??? I hate driving around waiting to find out if I fixed a problem like that.

I was thinking that whatever is killing the engine is also cutting power to the starter circuit???

Off the top of my head I am thinking the charging system, if the alternator is not charging, the car will drain the battery until it stalls, and then it wont crank. This is physically possible. A good battery will build up a charge overnight, then the car may crank and start the next day. This is a scenario that describes what you are thinking. i guess we need more input from the OP.

I prefer to not throw parts at a problem, but to systematically rule each component out.
The stalling could be un-related.
Grounds also do exactly as you describe.
Engine, body and chassis grounds. There arent many, so its only time and no money.
Same with checking the nss on the transmission.

Well yeah troubleshooting is a must, the op will have to look at it, they are coming here for a direction of where to look. I think the old Chilton manuals have troubleshooting sections .

When I wrote "cutting the power" I also meant the ground part of the starter circuit...just saying. A bad ground can kill the engine and not let the engine crank. He might get lucky and find a loose/corroded ground but then he'll have to drive for weeks or months to know if that was the problem.

Lets ignore the fact that it dies out - that is all figured out and nothing big really . . .

grounds - all good.

ignition switch could be suspect....

Or 50 year old wiring! Assumed only!

I have been adjusting the console shift linkage to get the reverse lights to fire correct and just a little past sweet. My Park posistion is solid as far as locked but sometimes needs a little tweak “push” on the shifter for the NS to engage for start.

I HAVE an old thread here somewhere asking what it was.

but my NSS on my 727 is an older one we determined and its not connected to anything. :O

car has been working fine
but i understand this could be dangerous if started in gear.

i believe it was a NS with a single post not three...
id have to look again.

For troubleshooting just put a jumper from the G terminal on the starter relay to good ground, prefer the battery. You can just clip a lead with gator clips on when the issue happens and you will know quickly, or test the brown wire on the starter G terminal for continuity to ground.

The single pole is correct. Attached 68 drawings.
