I'm here
I have a "Drag way friend". I see him only at the strip for the last 25 years. He gave me a set of headers that he was going to throw away. He brought them to the strip, thinking if i was there he'd give them to me. He did, and I bought his hot dog lunch :D Car guys are the best!

Who made these?
  • I did NOT loosen my motor or raise it to install drivers side
  • I did NOT drop any steering linkage
  • I did NOT remove any shifting linkage or kickdown
  • I did loosen the 2 starter bolts and push it back, but did not disconnect the wires.
  • I have had cyclones, hedmans, Dougs, and nothing, i mean nothing has installed on the drivers side like this!!!!
  • Literally, slipped into place in 25 seconds once the manifold was removed and starter slipped back. At least a full inch or more away from the starter (mini).
I know these wouldn't be ideal for a 450+ horsepower motor. i haven't installed the passenger side yet, but the drivers side is usually a pain so i thought I'd start with it.

Spitfires with a extension tube. Layson's has them. Look "Spitfire" up in search. A bunch of threads about them.

Yes, i looked up spitfires and seems to be correct. I've never had personal experience with spitfire, but if that's what these are, wow do they fit slick!

Appears they were more designed for early A's. I've never owned an early A. For sure not the optimum for performance, but a really nice fitting header that will certainly outflow a manifold. I don't know who did the extensions, but they drop down real convenient for the collectors. I was just amazed at the installation for the drivers side. Of course, the car I tried the drivers side is a '74 with manual steering.

They are better then a manifold.....BUT not great for 400 plus HP. IMO. They don't scavenge well....

Awesome you got them for free.
Can only speak to early-a experience but huge improvement over manifolds.
First car i took to track(old 75/80 in maryland) was a 66 273 cuda.
Ran low 16’s basically stock. Added a set of spitfires when harold first started making em and with no other mods except for more experience went to consistent mid to high 14’s.
They work. Enjoy em.

Thanks. I always appreciate real life experiences with the subject of topic.

Cmon Guys, shorty headers are for pussies.
Put some TTIs on and never look back.
Their smallblock step headers ARE THE BOMB.

Those are not "shorty" headers they are tri Ys
similar concept to the latest 4>2>1 step headers (which do have longer primary tubes)
many step headers are 4>1
If you are running mufflers you might or might not show a difference with long tubes
but if your long tubes are too big you loose big time
also many times the collectors are too big
give me a set of TTIs would be interesting to do a shootout

For the price and the shocking ease of insulation and what they're going on, Slam the gas pedal and don't look back! LOL
That's totally cool! Do they still make them and sell them new?

I'm just learning about these. I'm used to pulling the motor up about 4", removing steering linkage, kick down linkage, shift linkage, just to get the drivers side in. i had my exhaust pipe off because i'm installing the dynomax turbos, so i thought I'd see how (or if) they'd fit. Honestly I removed the manifold, 2 starter bolts and slid that back and had the headers up in there all in about 10 minutes.

The very first time I put that right side driver side header in my 72 Duster years ago that was it! I had the car jacked so high I believe the back bumper was touching! I had to steering box loosen the motor jacked up everything I could take off taking off with my brother-in-law pulling with all his might and me having it up on in underneath pushing and banging it! Never again! Always pull the motor! And put it in before doing anything else and then put the motor in.

Agree. these vs. the manifolds. I'll do a comparison at some point, compare E.T. slips.
I f ur happy w/ them, and they are that easy to get off, u ought to pull them and have them coated ! would look great and last a long long time ! My TTI`s wil go in w/o unhooking anything but the starter, but I have an aftermarket front end. Its still a ***** for a 72 yr old man laying on the floor tho, > reason I haven`t had mine coated !

Passenger side went in from the top, but i had 2 choices. 1.) remove the exhaust studs on the end of the head, or 2.) loosen the passenger side mount and jack the motor up on that side about 1 inch. Also, i had the oil filter removed. Relatively an easy install from the top, however, this side would need an oil filter adaptor.
