i have finally come to a point of rebuilding my car. Looking for opinions on build / advice i'm building my 340 not looking for a race car just fun cruiser im running 323 gears and 4 speed valiant. I never have had an exhaust fit worth a darn. The headers I have fit but royal pain in the butt to get in. question is I have stock manifolds but the driver side fits like crap the pipe dumps right into everything z bar torson bar ect.. Do the tti pipes fit around stuff ok or accurate or ???? should i just sell the old manifolds and buy headers i seem the manifolds sell for small fortune...2863553 2863549 Any pictures would be great

A friend has the good 340 manifolds on his 318 Dart, and it runs pretty darn well. Good torque, low maintenance. His is same as yours, except automatic. I know trying to get manifolds on my 4-speed car was much harder than fitting up some Doug's D453's...

Manifolds for the street.

Headers for racing, they suck on the street. Replacing starters, extra heat through the floor, speed bumps, etc. are all a pain with headers.

if you go headers then go with good ones like tti or dougs.. stay away fomr that hooker,headman,flowtech.. they all hang low and fit like crap..

i had tti on my dart and they were great.. no issues with fitment, extra heat, or starter removal.. they just fit nicely..

the dart we have now i went 340 manifolds just for the stock look and what a pain in the ***. i swear my tti headers were easier to install.. plus those damn things stay hot a long time..

Honestly if you only plan to make 300-400 HP manifolds will be just fine. I have a B engine in my duster with TTI 1-3/4" headers, i can get all the plugs from the top except #6, and if i have to change the starter, i think the transmission has to come out. lol So i would stay with Manifolds.

well i have a set of coated hooker NEVER AGIAN! the stock 340 fits perfect rt side but the driver side wtf??? the first foot and a half is a nightmare.. what ttis are you running long or shorty?

NOT if you buy TTI'S have had them on 2 duster's NEVER hit a speed bump, went on pretty easy, changing the starter no problem:D:D

I have had TTIs too.

Never again.

Manifolds for this old kid.

Nothing is perfect. If you can get the correct manifolds. Check for cracks and warpage. Have them machined flat, use good fasteners that will not loosen up. The pros are that they are quieter and usually have more clearance around them in the engine compartment. Or use TTI or Dougs headers. Not cheap but will last a lifetime with the Ceramic coating, and have no ground clearance problems. Just follow the manufacturers instructions and they go on and off easily. The coating helps reduce noise and heat. They cool down quickly and helps the engine perform better. I've gone both ways over the years and it just boils down to personal preference. they both work great.

i have nice pair 340 manifolds casting #s 2863553 2863549 no cracks or repairs. Supposed to be for 68-71 a body. They need blasted and coated the spray paint flaked off. they seem to sell for really good money just not sure if i should sell them and buy headers or keep them and try to find a decent fitting exhaust for them.

tti sells exhaust for those manifolds.. not cheap but fits damn nice...

they are the good manifolds.. and yes they bring a good buck..

power steering yes.. don't knwo about 4 speed.. call them and ask about it.. i'm sure you'll need their z-bar.

so your only concern is the fit?
manifolds are the best in every regard for street use.

Best fitting manifolds, especially with manual steering, are B body (early seventies). TTI sells head pipes 2.5"

Pause the video immediately, good view of drivers side

i called tti they recommended the 1 5/8 1 3/4 step headers polished ceramic coated thermal barrier 2.5 exhaust and dynomax mufflers also got the modified z bar I hope it all fits well!

The TTI guy said the same thing to us as I read in another post. Why use a shorty when the longs fit fine. We just did back to back small block Dart builds... one 68 with TTI long tube and one 67 with Dougs and both with power steering and 904's. First thing, the TTI's have better instructions with them and went in pretty easy (very). The slip tube on the drivers side helped them... but the Dougs weren't that bad either.
The TTI's have the slider because they wrap around the torsion bar and they're quite close. With V8 bars expect a rattle in fwd or reverse depending on where your engine is set... or just clearance them slightly. The rest was good except the column shift levers were no fun to get in there.
The Dougs required a bit more work... one tube was touching the steering box. That was a casting nub that I ground off the box... solved that problem. Another was along side the torsion bar on the drivers side. There was about 1/8" but I made it a 1/4" just because I hate header rattles. Lastly was the bottom of the steering column... that was close too so I gave it a little clearance tap. This car has a cable floor shift and therefor not a problem. Coating wasn't damaged on either, both sets will survive slight mods. Both cars had mini starters and could be removed fairly easily. The Dougs get the nod for ground clearance by an inch I'd say. Worth noting if you're a low ride Clyde.
I'd go with the Dougs next time but either one is a good choice.
