68 GTS Resto

Herer's some progress from today. Got the exhaust all mocked up. I need some hangers from Accurate then I'll be able to get the mufflers set in place and have everything lined up.
Got the sway bar installed but I'm not happy on the way it looks. I'm sending pics to Firm Feel to get their input.

Also got the calipers installed.

I'll hit it again tomorrow

Finally got an answer from Firm Feel. Apparently I ended up with B Body front mounts. That's why the canted look of the mouting points. They are rushing me replacements. We also had the bar upside down. The hump faces upward.

Worked on the under dash ebrake assembly and got that done. The heater cables are in but not clipped. That's a small challange in that my hands and arms are big so help will be needed with that. Got the grill in and mocked up last night.

it may very well be driveable before you move lol, be glad its not a 67 Valiant

Got the grill finished up as a well as the bumper. Tackled the steering column this week. Awhile back I painted the column and left it hanging on the rack. Somehow the wire securing the column broke and the column fell pushing the collapsable shaft inward. I forgot that it happened and when we installed the column we found it too short. After about a day trying to figure it out I remembered that 68 was the first year of the collapsable steering shaft.

So with a lot of pulling, tugging and cursing we got it out far enough for everything to line up.

next up side windows followed up by firing the motor. I'm waiting oin a plug n play dizzy from Firecore. Didn't want an extra harness to deal with.

That's the goal. It will stay up here at least until September. We still have a storage unit to clean out

Finally got the side windows in and adjusted. Thanks Nick and Neil. Got the ash tray in today, just needs some minor adjustments. Got two of the heater cable clips in, what a PIA

Also got the new dizzy on Thursday. Will be working on that as well

Great progress!! Looks like you're not too far away from a maiden voyage, keep up the great work!

Getting there. The tach is getting converted to run with an electronic ignition, I need to mount the Oil/water gauges then we can fire her up. I have a seat I can mount to take it out to seat the rings.

Got back from Mesa from dropping off a load of stuff at our new house. While I was gone the side glass was installed, the front and rear glass last week. My buddy Nick and Neal did the stripe yesterday. I started on the interior today. The motor will be fired soon

Very sexy car....nice job! I would love to see how this car would look wearing redline shoes :glasses7:

Redlines will be next. With the wife and I moving to Mesa. The budget wouldn't allow them at this time. The tires on the car now are 215/60/15. Me thinks a 225 or 235 would a better size.

Did the final thrash on the car in August. We moved to Mesa, AZ in September. here's the progress so far

Interior is in
Car was test driven the end of August
Got the tail panel back
Loose in now being worked, it's 99.9 percent finished.

I'll be going back up the WA the first or second week of November to pick the car up.

The last picture is what the car looked like in the late 70's

Well, made the long trip up to the NW last week to bring the GTS down to Mesa. The trip up was uneventful. Stopped at LVMS to visit a friend who was down for the division race. Stopped in Ely, Nevada for the evening and woke up to 4 inches of snow and it was still snowing. made for a slow go. Lost a tire on the trailer so that slowed me down. Finally go into Yakivegas.

Worked on finishing up on loose ends and drove the car around to shake out the bugs. Has a little flat spot in the carb but I'll deal with that at home.

Anyway loaded up and headed south on Monday. Stopped in the bay area to see my aunt and finally got home last night.

So, unloaded the car this morning and took it for a short drive

Well, its going on 3 years since I've been in the valley of the Phoenix. Have a new shop up, all wired and ready to do some other things down the road. The car was practically finished in the summer of 15 but had to stop to make a move to Phoenix. That was August of 15. Got the car down here in November of 15.

Much has happened since then. Basically working out all the bug especially the cooling and some cosmetic things. Major fupa was busting the front mounting tab of the driver side exhaust. As many of you know those don't grow on trees. Fortunately I found another 67 manifold and the broken manifold has been repaired. That may be flipped in the near future.

Anyway, the car has been pretty much been shaken down. There are a few things I still need to address. Pretty much the only miles on this car been local cruse ins. Mostly freeway miles and some stop and go. Still working on addressing the water temp issue. I think though I have that pretty much licked. Took the car to Springfling last month. Drove it on the cruise in LA traffic. With the Bilstein shocks the roads there beat the crap out of the car so I've been tightening loose hardware for the past several weeks. I like the Bilsteins in that they give a little better feel going around corners in this car. Never had an issue on the roads here because they are well maintained but the LA roads are really bad.

Before leaving I took the car into a local shop and had the motor flushed. Cleaned out a lot of garbage, mostly residue from the machining process. The car ran cool except when I had to idle in traffic lot. Temp tended to creep up above 200 but when in neutral I would bring the "Rs" up and it kept the temps down. I figured a clutch fan would help with that.

Put the clutch fan in last week so that should solve the idle temps. I'll be driving it to the last sub 100 degree cruis-in tomorrow vening. That will give me a chance to see how the clutch fan performs. I also decided against adding a remote mirror. Just didn't want to drill a hole in the door for the switch so I bought some new poverty mirrors which I'm installing. The car originally came with just the one mirror but I deviated from originality and added the passenger mirror before the car was painted. I like having that passenger mirror.

As far as the grill, been thinking about what Rhinodart has been saying, that the paint on the grill is for a standard Dart. When the temps drop this fall I'll be pulling off the grill and detailing it out so that its correct. Too hot in the summer to do that.

No matter how much you work on these things they are never really done.

Also attached some more back in the day pictures of the car. circa 1979 as well of some pics of last months Springfling.
