'73 Duster 440, not sure the size of the aluminum radiator.

Wasn't even 70 degrees outside and it overheated after driving about 30 miles. Popped the hood and the lid to the overflow tank was missing (popped off somewhere I assume) and the coolant was boiling like crazy. I let it cool down then continued on my way. Another 25 miles and I stopped to cool down again Then after my business out of town was complete, I drove 60 miles back home, without a problem. Temperature stayed cool, coolant wasn't boiling out of the overflow anymore. Once it was cool to the touch, I still had some coolant in the overflow, so I didn't lose much when it boiled over.

I don't know if some gunk got stuck in the line somewhere or what, but I think I need to flush it all just to be sure. Any other thoughts?

stuck thermostat that finally opened.See how it performs the next few trips.

I have had a piece of junk get stuck in the radiator cap valve causing it to let coolant by and get warm.
It acted just like it overheated but without the temps.
Pulled the cap and saw the valve stuck open by what looked like a small piece of string, and have never had a problem again.

What if anything have you done to the engine / cooling system? Has it ever done this before?

Overfilled radiator, with loose cap following.
Once the excess puked out, she was happy again. Proved by driving home with no cap and no drama. Since she did that, there is no good reason to run a mega pressure cap. I have been running a 7 pounder for nearly two decades.

This is one scenario cuz your description is somewhat open to interpretation.

Nothing's been changed or altered since the new engine was put in last year. It's run a little warm a few times but nothing close to this. Temperature-wise, it's actually been the best it's ever been since my trip home. Drove it to work yesterday without issue(other car broke over the weekend and couldn't get the part til monday)
