2018 Small Block Race...... join the Fun

probably would be 31's off the vehicle. Yeah, cool thing with this race is a lot of info on builds, or just info on a 100% stock Durango :D

In the video it looks like you beat that little rice burner? Making all that noise?

I plan to take my Duster to the local strip this Friday for street legal night. This will be my first time ever at a drag strip other than as a spectator so wish me luck! I think my adjusted number was 13.6 but my goal for this week is to get down the track safely and learn a few things. Before I go, I will check my tune as best I can. I think my timing is less than ideal so ill start there.

Wish me luck!

Cheering for ya! Your sure to have fun !!

Well I made it to the track on Friday! It was a great time! The volunteers at Saskatchewan International Raceway made me feel so welcome and were very helpful with the things I didn't know. I got there when the gates opened and had 3 runs in quick like before it got busy. I think I made a total of 10 runs with the best being 16.404 at 84 MPH, and the poorest being 16.6 something.

I know it is running super rich and the timing is not correct, just set by ear. I planned on tuning it as good as I could on Friday during the day but life got in the way of that. At least I have a starting point now and really, there is nowhere to go but up! Traction was a real problem, my 245/60-15 Cooper Cobras really are as bad as folks say. I had to baby it off the line and then when I shifted it into 2nd at 5500 I chirped the tires again!

I think next time I go back, I will be armed with a better tune only and see how far that gets me. I will go through the carb completely even though it only has 2000 miles on it at most. It has been subjected to a couple real bad backfires and I heard that is bad for power valves. Also I need to mark TDC with a piston stop because I'm pretty sure it's way off too.

I don't intend to make this a dedicated drag car but I want to make it as good as I can while still ensuring street ability first.

I've added your stats in the standings :)
Glad you had fun, and you are right, you have a starting place. I also agree, you go up from here (and E.T. will go down) :) Thanks for posting, and looking forward to editing your improvements ! We're cheering for ya !!

Wait a minute .... you boiled the tires on a 16 sec car?
He has a lot of torque I think..... LOL!
With Cooper Cobra tires, yea, EZ-PZ, nice and easy.
The Cooper Cobra is a very nice driving tire. Much better grip, wear and wet road traction then the BFG it replaced as the go to tire for the muscle car crowd. But it is still a street tire 100%.

Yeah, it lacks traction for sure. After babying it off the line, it would chirp the tires on the 1/2 shift.

Ran the "318willrun" entry. Actually, I took it down with the 3310 Holley I bought to see how it performed against the Street Avenger Holley.
It did worse, ran a 15.15 (index was 14.6).
Anyways, I recorded it in the standings, and so far it's good for second place. :)

Not sure if I'll get this car back down for redemption or not. Lots of projects, and busy with work!
Still got to get the "360willrun" car down and the "wifewillrun" ramcharger :D

Well I feel like a dummy! Playing around under the hood of my Duster today and o see the secondaries only open about 1/16". That would be a factor in my 1/4 mile time. Man I got a lot to learn!

Can't wait to see the redemption run...… :D

360willrun... Post 55
Ran today, poor air quality, 14.11 E.T.
Dial index 14.0 …. I'm close...… :)

P.S. - Pass made with RPM intake on now instead of the Action Plus

Finally got to the drag strip tonight to see what my car will do. Its a 73 Satellite, 318, 2.76 rear gear and dual exhaust. The scales were closed so I didn't get a weight but I will go to the truck stop to get that. Ran 17.525 at 78.24 mph. I am guessing 3800 lbs. so my time should be 16.4. Way off! Going to start modifying the car so updates will come with the changes.

I'm finally tuning her up! I got the timing mark confirmed with a piston stop, checked compression, gonna change the plugs and wires, and an FBO in the distributor. Going to get some new wires and go to town making her run right. I really want to shave some time off!

Awesome! I added your stats as you listed to the standings. If you learn the weight is different, we'll make adjustments. I think you can slice some time off, a little tuning and tweaking. Are you manually shifting it? Sometimes the factory kickdown linkage will shift 'em too early.
Anyways, glad you made a pass :)

I'm pretty sure the secondaries were not opening when I last raced. I likely wont get back to the track till September, but there are 3 street legal nights in September and I hope to attend them all. Then our racing season is done here.

I am finally going to tune this right. I’m starting from scratch. I pulled the plugs, pulled the wires and distributor cap, pulled the distributor and it’s going to run right or kill me in the process! I have researched the **** out of this procedure, but you can’t beat experience and that is something I don’t have.

I confirmed my timing mark with a piston stop that I made. I was actually hoping it was off because last time I was messing with it, it idled the best and had most vacuum (12”) with about 24* initial timing according to my cheap timing light. I will look around and see if I can borrow a timing light to compare to mine.

I checked compression. I checked it cold which may not be the best indication, but what I found was they are all very close to each other. 105, 97, 100, 100, 97, 95, 97 and 100. Those pressures seem low, but they are factory dished pistons in a 76 block with factory 1.88 J heads so I knew they wouldn’t be high. I wish I had some idea what cam is in it.

Here is my plan, I’m going to start with new plugs and wires. The plugs look like I am running lean. I’ll set timing at 20* initial (I know, it seems high) with the FBO plate set to add 14 more for 34 total power timing. My distributor has a V can with a 7R on the arm so I am assuming it will give me another 14* at cruise for a total of 48* at cruise. V can is hooked to ported vacuum.

I set my t-port at just barely over square so I will try and set my Idle at 750-850 or wherever it’s happy. It doesn’t seem to matter what I do with this car, it always wants to idle at about 550 or 600 in gear when it is set to idle in neutral at 950 or more. I have 5.5 PSI fuel pressure after my regulator.

Wish me luck! I really want to get back to the track and improve my time, but I am loving the cruising around too.

Posting this up since I'm going to make a few changes while it's hot, humid, and raining everyday.
