How do you clean/remove rust on the inside of chrome bumper?

Turn it upside down , soak some towels in vinegar and stuff them in the bumper. Pour some more vinegar then cover in plastic or use large plastic garbage bags to prevent evaporation. Leave it sit over night and check the next day.

i use the cleaner for POR,,you spray it on the rust turns black and becomes iron oxide, then spray a layer of Paint- Over -Rust (POR),a guart of it plus cleaner is about $75, have it on some parts in the weather now for over 2 years, no rust showing.. Wear gloves ,por is nasty stuff, not found anything to get it off your hands, takes about 2 weeks and a lot of scrubbing to get your hands clean., and if you spray it use a mask

I am the biggest skeptic you will ever meet but after trying the Vinegar trick I was astonished !

Throw a rusty bolt in a cup of vinegar overnight and see what happens . Just make sure you wash and neutralize ASAP afterward. !

And 2$ per gallon beats 30$/gal for evaporust !

I was thinking about dumping my bumpers in the 55 gallon mix of molasses/water I have. However, once I damaged some piston pins that I left in molasses for a week or so. Not sure what would happen.

Muriatic acid from the local hardware store will take ALL the rust off right NOW without waiting, but won't hurt the steel or chrome.
It doesn't "convert" or any of that, but eats rust down to clean steel.

(Funny how someone disagrees with my post but doesn't say a word about why):D

Don't use Muriatic acid ! If you get any on the chrome it will instantly ruin it .There is an acid you can use not as harsh.Phosphoric Acid .Truck supply places sell it as a truck wash for alum trailer bodies. Even with this milder acid you need to protect the chrome with something like a liquid masking agent or grease and ALWAYS WEAR EYE PROTECTION ! Concrete cleaning products from the hardware store also contain phosphoric acid and can be used. These work faster than vinegar but you need to pay attention to what you are doing

The chrome Man the chrome...
Having my rig truck always next to buildings on construction sites, I always inquired when masons were going to power wash bricks. They use a mix of muratic and water, that I did not want overspraying on my truck.

All their spray rigs the paint was fine, but every trucks chrome bumpers was rusted to ****.

Must be the time it was on the chrome because I pretty much rinse rust off with it and rinse the area with clean water after.
I have never let it stay on long.

I've had good luck with Lysol toilet bowl cleaner ( not the bleach kind). Works good and fast on bleeding through rust, just remember to wash it off real good three times, then WD40 it. If you do this on a work bench, put something down 1st, like sheet plastic and newspaper. Wash that stuff off real good, as it is an acid.

i see some are skeptics of the POR, if you put it on clean metal it may peel, and if not cleaned with the proper cleaner it may peel, because cleaner changes the rust to iron oxide, but i have a back and front bumper brace off 74 duster that is used in 5 mph impact, i POR them nearly 3 years ago but did not use them, they are leaning on the side of my garage outside and get rain, snow and evening sun, they are still black with no rust and if you try to get the POR off you have to chisel it off,POR is not made to use like Flex Seal, put it on too thick and it will roll up, but if you spray it on like painting a car it has always worked for me, and my body man of 30 years has been using it, says he has never had a problem with it and no customer complaints,,,meanwhile i will bow out ,i have other fish to fry.

Maybe you know but it hasn't been mentioned. After the back of the bumper has been cleaned I paint the back with a bright silver or chrome- like paint which keeps it looking good for years.
