So I don’t know what to do. I have a 67 dart with a 318. It has the 7 1/4 in it. Big bolt pattern. I know the 8 3/4 is the best but it also costs a lot. Is the 8 1/4 okay? My cars never gonna make more then 400 hp. I heard the 8 1/4 is fragile? Any advice would be great.

An automatic car with street tires will be pretty forgiving on a weaker rear end. Just build what you can afford for now and see how it goes? I am not sure if you can get a sure grip for an 8-1/4 i am new to mopars still.

I'm kinda in the same boat as you. I'm putting a stick behind a 360 and trying to figure out what I need vs what I can afford. There are Sure Grips for the 8 1/4. The important thing is getting the correct Sure Grip for the rear end that you have.

I've heard there are sure grips just not sure if it’s worth it. I know it’s a matter of time until I break my 7 1/4. But I can’t afford an 8 3/4

Talk to Dr. Diff. He's a great guy to talk with about your needs. Having an auto will help an 8 1/4 last.

With street tires and 400 hp or less the 8.25 will hold up just fine if it’s in good repair. The 8.25’s are underrated, on the street they’re a good axle. Sure, you can break one if you beat on it, but with a moderate small block they’ll last if you’re not stupid about it. Even more so with an auto.

There’s ones pretty local to me within an hour. It’s from a 74 dart. Mines a 67 do you know if it would bolt up to my car?

I have about 430hp in my 68Barracuda,
and an A833
and an 8.75.
and 295/50-15 BFG T/As, you know, the junkiest tires in the world...... they say.
And I'm on the third ring gear.
All street.
Also on my 4th trans, second driveshaft, second shifter, second clutch and about 5th clutch disc. But still on first SureGrip.Hyup nice engine for sure, but the attrition is a bit of a concern.

There are two things that kill the rears; 1) shock, and 2) peg-legging

Yes you can get track locks for them and gears pretty cheap out of jeep Dana 30's. Usually under 100.

They put these 8 1/4 in Ramchargeres, I have seen a door slammer ( Fastest door slamer 1/4 mile race in Memphis and the fastest mopar was running n 8 1/4

Just watch what housing you get one is for 2.45 and higher and you cannot put lower gears in it.

I'd run the 7.25 until it breaks and then buy a dana the same width.

The 8.75 isn't the best. The dana is, by far, and far cheaper too.

The 8 1/4 is a great rear for the price.
8 3/4 is a complete waste of money when you can build a D60 for less.
Stroker motor never messed with the 8 1/4 but I built a 8 3/4 before I broke it and broke that within 20 passes and built the D60 and done. The 8 1/4 was great and all with 355 gears and that I was still at about $300 and sold it for that.

Use the 8-1/4 & never worry about it again.

My cousin is hard on stuff, he could break an anvil, but the 8.25 in is 73 roadrunner, 340 4-speed has still held up to relentless abuse.
