if you have Hurst shifter, and a-body 833, I've found you can't follow the SM. You know the hole in the shift levers on the shifter? I think you're supposed to shove a 1/4" drill rod in the holes to adjust/ line up the rods properly. But I always found it didn't work, unless you left the reverse rod out of the equation. Don't know if that is your situation, but if it is, just try it, maybe it'll help you.
