Finally got my 66 Valiant, back to the track. Broke a ring and cracked a piston last year. My crank damper had slipped, and I had 10 degrees to much timing in the engine. Detonation is not good. Installed a used stock piston, and rings. Installed a new 9 1/2 inch converter, and changed from a 3.91 gear to 4.56 gear. Between life things and rain Have been waiting for several weeks, to test. Had a 60 foot time of 1.669, and 7.766 at 86.64 in the 1/8 and 12.409 at 103.02 in the 1/4. The car really hooked good, and I am only running a 7x26x15 slick. Smilling ear to ear.

WOW.
That's one Leaning tower of badassery.

Nicely done, sir.

You proved people wrong who think leaning towers of power are slow...............

NICELY DONE!!!

That is really great, Charrlie! I am jealous because I'm still trying to get my '62 V-200 (LA engine) to launch decently. But then again, I'm not too smart! I'll just have to keep trying.

You must have your chassis and suspension really peaked and tweaked. Maybe I will PM you sometime to ask your advice. Thanks a lot.

That's great Charlie! Love the part about swapping in a stock piston.
Just don't break it right before Clay City.

What is great about this car, it is totally low budget. It has a bone stock short block, except for cam. Does have a $600 converter, and the "A" Body 4.56 SG 8 3/4 rear. The rear suspension is stock "A" Body 5 leaf springs, cheap stock shocks, and doesn't even have a pinion snubber. I am geared a little too deep, though. Going through the traps at over 6300 rpm. Maybe a 28-30 inch tire, or 4.11 gear with the 26 in tire. Next race is 1/8 mile, so I'm good for now.

I'm building a "Clay City" engine. Hope to get it done in time. A few more "good" parts into it. Got some HC pistons, 12.5 to 1 with a stock cc head. That was actually the hold up. All my heads that had big valves, were heavily milled. So I am building another head. Got the seats cut for the big valves, but need to find the time to do the porting.

Last time I weighed it was 2750 with driver. Should still be close to that. I will be weighing it before the race at Motor Mile, in case I reset the C/N 1/8 mile record.

Very nice. What has been done to the heads? My 360 in a 65 Valiant has been a disappointment this year. It only runs 9.60s @ 76 mph in the 1/8th. My 60’ times are around 2.3

Head is milled .125, oversized valves, and pocked porting in the bowl.
Bet your car needs either/or lower rear gear, higher stall converter

Wasn't able to race at Motor Mile. Truck broke down on the way there. The Race car has developed a "knock", just moving it around, and it is getting worse. I have a sinking feeling, I forgot to torque the rod nuts on number 5 cyl. Won't know for awhile. I'm building a new 170 engine for the car. Then I will pull the 225 and open it up. I'm going to try and make the slant six race at Knoxville Dragway in Tn the 10th and 11th of Aug. Going to try to set the 1/8 mile D/N record. If all goes well, will take it to the BIG slant six race Sep 7,8,9th in Clay City, Ky.

Ok, Update.
Good: Got the 170 engine built, and in the car.
Good: Pulled the "knocking" 225 out, and it was not the engine knocking. Forgot to tighten TQ bolts :(
Good: got the 170 to the track Fri night.
60 ft.....1.734
1/8........7.942 at 82.92 mph
1/4.......12.874 at 95.03 mph
Video of the run, with 170 engine
Bad: engine layed over at just before the stripe, and started pushing smoke. Haven't checked it yet, but think it ate a piston(s).

Oh yeah. Really ate number 3 piston. Melted aluminum in the cylinder, combustion chamber, and exhaust port. Also warped the valve.
Put together another 170 block I had in the pile. Standard bore, new stock cast pistons, moly rings. Pulled a crank, from another engine, that was .010 and.010, in good condition. Installed a used Racer Brown SS-14 cam (268 dur, .466 lift). Can't use too big a cam (no valve reliefs, 170 is zero deck motor, but this one is .040).
Had another head in my stash that has 39 cc chambers, but stock valves, that just needed washing. Will install the head, today. I will still have to check the nitrous system, to see what went wrong. Hope to remove the old engine, and get the new one in, by the weekend.
This motor will not be as fast, but at least I'll be able to race.

Well, everything is back together, and it runs. Tomorrow I will double check everything, reset the valves, reset timing, and clean it up. Plan on leaving for Knoxville dragway on Thur. Slant six race, Fri nite, and Sat nite. We'll see what I screw up this time.

Who knows. If you look at the HP/jet charts, they are different between manufacturers, and between different ones on the net. It is a plate system, and the last run I had #53 fuel, and # 56 nitrous. When I ran my Barracuda, with a 170 engine, and a fogger system, I the biggest I sprayed was 225HP.
