Hey guys, I'm seeking some advice about the steering coupler. I just rebuilt the front suspension on my 74 duster. I relaxed everything with moog parts. I got the PST 1.03 bars and the Bilstien shocks. I also welded up the k member and had it powder coated. I decided at that time I would replace the steering box. I just replaced it with a rebuild one from the local parts supplier. Right now, I have everything back together except for the steering coupler to the steering box. I can't get this thing back on. I have tried completely removing the steering column and moving it around to get the right angle and I still can't get it. The coupler is about the only thing I haven't replaced on the car so I was considering replacing it. I have noticed in some other threads some guys are mentioning using a borgenson u joint. Does anyone know the correct part to use. I looked on the borgenson website and it only shows an adapter for their steering box. Thanks in advance!

I would take it a part, clean it out and inspect the insides first. I have seen some whith deep wear grooves in them. If it's ok,just rebuild it,repack it and be done

..........so which number fits our cars?.............kim..........

I think it's the second one down on the page. GM/pinto...3/4" smooth on one end to weld to the steering shaft and 36 teeth on the steering box end. But check the number of teeth on your steering box to be sure!

Had the same problem with a Cardone box. Inspect the splines on both very carefully. I finally got it on but it turned out to be a really sloppy piece of crap! My alignment guy thought it was a worn out original I had cleaned up , 10° of play in either direction.
Replaced it with a Firm Feel Stage III , coupler slipped right on with no effort.

Hope you have better luck with your box.

Thanks guys! I'll check into that one from summit. Knuckleduster, I really hope it isn't like that. I would hate to have to replace it again.

I got mine from Bryke Racing. I think it was about the same price. The fit on the splines was good.

You don't really need to weld them to the shaft. Borgeson p/n 013464 should be the one you want. I believe that double pinning it as shown on the Borgeson web site may actually be better. I know that when I put my Borgeson late GM p/s box in my '69 Dart that I pinned it as shown here. Works great:

Did you have to have that machined for the pins or did you just drill them out?

I did it with a hand drill. Would certainly be easier with a drill press. Precision of these holes is not real critical, as the pins are expanding "roll pins" and will expand into whatever hole size is there (within reason). I used a couple slightly smaller cobalt bits to drill thru first, then reamed them to size with the bit that Borgeson supplied. Do one hole complete and install the pin. Then do the other one. Make sure you have everything lined up correctly before starting!
Note: I am not sure that every u-joint made has room for these pins. p/n 013464 may not have room for the pins... and I don' think that's what I am using now because I have the late model GM box in my car and it needed a different/special u-joint. I would suggest calling Borgeson to make sure you get the right one.

Well, it looks like what you guys are using is for the manual box. I guess I should have included that mine is power. Does anyone know which one I should get for power steering?

I'm getting confused. I thought you had a stock power steering box, and was trying to put a stock coupler on it. If so, line up the coupler with the master spline, and slide it on. These cars use this style of coupler to compensate for flex in the unibody. The Borgeson coupler doesn't allow for that. And it is unnecessary unless you have special considerations.

Oh, man. I worked this out a while back. I don't recall the Borgeson coupler I ended up going with. It worked very well thoigh. Actually last night I removed it. I just finished installing the Gerst tubular front suspension and it changes to R&P. It uses two u- joints and a section of DD.

None of this has anything to do with a stock steering box and coupler. Thats why I'm asking for clarification.

Gotcha, I was not intending to use a stock coupler. I was using a stock steering box at the time. I was trying to find a u joint that would work.
