Can these Fast backs be saved?

-
Get a donor roof. It's nothing but spot welds on some sheet metal. Brace the car (what's left of it) up really well drill out the spot welds. Remove the panels, prep and weld new ones on. Your going to need an entire roof. Skin, drip rails, inner roof braces, etc. You will need a nice clean complete parts car to source everything from. There will be NOTHING from those cars reused. Your basically just going to need to swap the VIN over, but it's probably rusted also.

What about the ten thousand other parts on both cars that are missing? They have both been stripped of anything usable.
I have a lot of those parts. Plus as I am not looking for 100% restoration correctness. I am only looking to get it back into shape for drag car. If pieces are missing from interior I don't care at this point. Parts can be acquired later or not at all.

What about A pillar alignment and being able to replace the A pillars if they are rusted to far gone? Doner car? Any A body will work? Straighness so the glass will fit in correctly?

Your parts car you would be removing the roof from I bet would be tons better than the one you are trying to save. I am sure 99 % of the people here would suggest starting off with a better project car. I f it was a M code car,I could see it maybe.

Put lipstick on a pig, and you still have a pig!!?????

Yes, roofs can be replaced. Search the forum. People have done it here.

Too bad you don't live closer.
I would sell you for a reasonable price a project car of mine that was an ex race car and has been tubbed and back halfed poorly etc. that would be perfect for you.
It's a '69 fast back Barracuda formula S that was originally a 340 automatic console car in Y2 yellow.
It's rough, but not nearly as rough as either of the cars you showed pictures of here.
This is more of what you should be looking for IMHO if you want a major project....................

Have you been advertising these cars for sale to get them back out there in the public and see if someone will restore them or get them ready for race track? I am not interested in them but just wondering if you had any offers?

Can these cars be saved? Looking to make some drag cars and wondering if anyone has done or replaced roofs for our cars? AMD make them or can it be done doner wise? Probably may need new pillar arms also. I can do any type of body work/rail replacement but never got into a bad roof or anything like this. I have doors and few other good parts for replacement. Anything other than a fish roof fit our cars?

I take it your name is Merlin, Mr. Wizard

Actually, i traded a couple of cars for them thinking i had a buyer, but that fell through.
I did have a couple more people that showed interest in them, but that fell through too.
I have not advertised them yet, but that will be in the near future.
The blue '67 parts car has a great rear floor and frame rail clip to fix the '69 Formula S.
The front of the blue car is very rusty in the front. (frame rails etc.)
I sold the roof off of it to a local guy on FABO here to fix his son's '68 fastback that had damage to the roof from something falling on it and being poorly repaired with bondo etc. years ago.
I was thinking of changing the lower back half and cleaning the car up a bit and add some more parts to make it more complete as soon as my health gets better.
Maybe you're right, i should throw it out there as is with the rest of the parts car and see if anyone would like to take it on.
It's not that bad really, it just looks lousy. It still has the fender tag on it as well!
We'll see............
I would take a trade on it as well, hopefully a '68 or '69 Dart 2 door or a '69 Coronet 2 door in equal shape.
(Just thinking out loud here)
Thanks for asking.

you sold the whole roof off the blue one? The roof skin or the whole frame also? Is there any roof frame there on it anymore? The blue one looks pretty good. Rails and floors can be fixed. Tons of parts out there for all the bolt on sheet metal and interior. I have 68 and 69 darts and a 69 Coronet also. If your interested I can shoot you some pics.

well now you get to talk to a northern canadian that is used to heavy rust or putty mobile's to work with. you said it would be a race car not a street car so you will be building a cage and floors and have a simple dash on a flat sheet of tin. tilt one piece front ends and maybe a set of tail lights with a fiberglass rear bumper should get you the look you want on the track and lighter than stock metal. couple of doors and lexan should get it done. i talked to A.M.D. a week ago and they said they have no intentions of producing front fenders because they did not make lots of these cars when new and i do not believe they have a fastback roof made but do have rear fenders or skins are available. do not be afraid of doing a roof and pillars. its just body work. if you have restored bent unavailable metal before then a roof should not scare you either. its a race car not a street or show car. i was lucky to find up here a 69 that was stripped to save another but i will build a street driven one with what i have. yes it will cost me dearly but i am the type of guy that finds a floor from another car and install's it. weld the brackets where needed for a seat and cover it with carpet or not. who will ever know or care. i have seen a 426 hemi in a old honda civic with the guy sitting in the back seat on the track. do you think there are restoration sheet metal for early Honda's? he made it work and the outside looked stock. yes he put hours in it but it was only his time after work till it was done and you can watch his grin every time he pass's you by sitting in the stands. i lived in the states for 5 years and seen what people consider junk and throw away and my neck hairs go up every time and wish i could save one of them. i agree that it is not worth a total restoration or to flip it because you will not get your money back but as you said , it's going to be a race/track car so it can be a cheap thrill to save its look. even this chevy , ford and A.M.C. NUT loves the look of this body style. have fun deciding after making a real list of what you really need and expect from one of these rust bucket's.

Thnks for input. Not putting in a cage though. No roof is produced from AMD for these cars. Checked into it so will have to find a wrecked destroyed car that roof is half decent to graft on.

go to the wreaking yard with a measuring tape and check out all roofs and their dimensions and you will find something that can fit. ever build a pelt car?

No, never built a pelt car. I can aquire one roof already cut off and with a qtr panel attached from it in the same yard

I haven't done a Barracuda roof but I have replaced a Duster roof. I just cut the A pillars near the bottom and cut through the quarter from the back of the vent window to almost the bottom of the back glass. I cut the donor car the same and welded it on. It took time but turned out good.

well up here in northern rust heaven we sometimes build pelt cars. glad you found a roof . now you just have to save the rest of it. patience will save another one for all to enjoy and see again.

I have an old Mopar buddy from Tn. He calls them "quilt" cars!!! Any car that is not 100% from the factory steel is a quilt car!! He has more $ than most of us!!! But he has several 70 Hemi Cuda survivors.
I don't mind cutting and welding as long as the rust goes away!!

i never heard of a quilt car. up here in the great white north , when there is no frame or floor left we find a car with the same wheel base or about and cut it from the floors down and but the body/skin(pelt) onto it and the rest is welding it back up. Camaro's / firebird's fit nice under mid 30's to 40's bodies well. i can see a more door a-body Valiant/ scamp etc. sliced and it would fit nice under one of those cuda bodies as a good starting base for it come back to the streets or track in this case.

If you can buy them cheap the back glass is worth $2K(each) alone! Also the red one has a lot of good metal and deck lid. Saving trim, chrome, emblems and vent windows you would make your $$ back if you have time and space to store them.

yes i agree, save everything and sell it to people that need these parts. sitting in the bushes is a waste.

Doing a roof with structure down the pillars is much different then doing just a skin. The pillars are several pieces of metal together so basically you have to peel a "cap" so you have room to work inside. Maybe build sleeves, staggered joints etc, slide it all together, weld all the inside pieces back together, and weld the caps back on. You can't just butt them together and weld only the outermost and innermost panels and call it good. As a bodyguy, I'm over conquests. Those car are way rough for me and I'm a glutton for punishment.

The blue one has the whole roof cut off of it.
Besides being rusty from the front seat forward, the quarters are full of bondo and the V.I.N. is missing.
It was smashed pretty hard on the driver's side into the upper door pillar.

I look at it this way, the car was rough and stripped when i got it so i will part it out to the end and the parts left are going to save another 2 cars and get them on the road.
That's not taking into account the '69 Barracuda 318 4 speed car (now restored) that many of the parts went on from this car before i got it.
Believe me, i saved a lot of cars that people thought were too rough to restore in my past, the '69 race car is just one of many.
Too bad you live 2,000 miles or so from me, i'd definitely talk to you about trading some of my projects for some of your projects.

Thanks,
Tom.
