OP, this question is the key.
Slant six cars had a center steering link that had a shallow "drop" in the middle since the 170 and 225 Slanty had a shallow oil pan. V8 oil pans are deeper and because of this, in 1964, they had a different center link for V8 cars. It dips further down and allows plenty of clearance for the V8 pan.
