Never had any problems with Walker/Dynomax mufflers through the years until these Ultraflo's pn17220 3" in/out. Around 2000+ road miles, 10 passes down the 1/8, they seemed to change in sound a while back, not as crisp? On way to work this morning in the van, running great, came to a stop a few blocks away from work and all of a sudden rattling like sheets of metal being jack hammered! Took a look, could see and feel split seams. Great! Picked up some exhaust repair tape and some aluminum metal tape and tried to do a rig, no good. The drive home from work it really got bad and blew it apart even more. And the other muffler I could feel a split on top! What crap, wtf! Seems it's not unheard of that these things split apart, from some extensive searches. Sounded awesome while they lasted, not very long though. Biggest pieces of **** I've ever bought!

Man, that looks like what happens when an engine has a major fart.

I won't buy MagnagarbageFlow ,or any chamber muffler ,anymore.
I like Ultra Flo long case ,turbo muffler style , or Walker Super Turbo muffler...
Been through this nonsense, running basic IMCO 2.5 " reverse flow " ,as of current. Not happy ,with those either.

I USED TO TRY TO RUN THE TUBO MUFFLERS OF THE TIME, ON ONE OF MY 426 HEMI`S, THEY WOULD LAST ABOUY TWO WEEKS AND BLOW APART !!

I've read some posts elsewhere that muffler shops quit using these Ultraflo's because of having to replace them so often, and most say that the mufflers crack in the metal due to being too thin to begin with, the actual welds are good, which is the case with mine. The welds are fine, but cracked right at the edge of the welds.

Interesting!

So far the 2.5" Dynomax ultrflow's on my Duster have held up just fine, they've been on there for well over 10k miles now. Guess I'll have to keep an eye on them. I love those mufflers, hopefully they hold up.

I know that the Summit turbo's that came with the Summit 2.5" system I have on that car only lasted few months before they blew apart at the crimped seams, pretty much in the same place as those ultraflows in the picture. I though that was weird, but I guess it's a more common problem than I thought.

They do sound really good, got lots of compliments on how it sounded. I've done the strip runs and alot of back road flogs, I'm sure that didn't help. Then I noticed the slight change in sound, still good, just figured the packing had something to do with that. Under normal use and occasional hard runs surely they're fine. Just not strong enough for what I've thrown at em

Be careful when a muffler splits on top. That occurred on my '63 Pontiac Grand Prix (stock exhaust) and caught the back seat on fire. The fire department had a hard time extinguishing the plastic burning under the seat. Later, I ended up in Tijuana, Mexico to replace the entire interior: upholstery, headliner, door panels, dash, package shelf, with a diamond-tuck pattern. Paid $150.00 US and it was finished in one day (circa 1975).

Not disputing the thin metal, but maybe they tear up more easily when the entire system doesn't have enough hangers?
Could that be a possible culprit?

My system consists of Doug's headers with about 20" of pipe between the header flanges to the mufflers with turndowns dumped in front of the axle, only hangers are the rubber strap types on the muffler outlets like any other system. It is much shorter than a typical a/b body. Overall length is approx. 44" or so flange to turndown. Hangers are definitely not an issue, but the vibration and exhaust flow, metal integrity after the welds during manufacturing and metal thickness would be a determining factor I'd guess

Take pics and email them.. Whats the warranty on materials and workmanship ? Even out of warranty, that is F'd.

That's a good point. Looking at those pictures again it looks like those welds undercut the edge of the metal, make it VERY thin just on the other side of the weld. That's something Dynomax should be aware of, could just be a "lemon", or it could mean their welder needs to be re-adjusted. I'm assuming that's an automated weld.

yes, it looks like the welder missed! That would be a 'quiet' recall memo if they were smart...like Mopar's 2.0 head gasket.." If it comes in, just fix it for them...."

I had an ultra flo split down the middle not even close to any welds it lasted 1200 miles I replaced it and its still doing good about 2000 miles now .
they sound great . the ultra flo on the passengers side is still going strong at 3200 miles .

There is a limited lifetime warranty on these, one has to print and fill out a form, have the sales reciept, and either take them to where you got em or a place that sells them. I got em from a Rock Auto seller, I ain't gonna box em up and go through all that so if and when I try I'll have to find someone local willing to bother with it. It'll be a pain in the *** and a bunch of bullshit I'm sure:rolleyes:

rockauto will have your sales info and im sure there is an authorized dynomax retailer by you that can look at them. Id get an RMA (return material authorization) from Dynomax from the pics before I walked into a muffler shop and dropped these on his desk. worth an afternoon? There useless you you right now unless you want to try and have them rewelded.

That's what I'll end up doing, for an immediate fix I just slapped some Race Bullets on it good Lord what a racket , the Ultraflo's have an awesome idle and great overall sound, but when it comes to wot runs the Bullets are unbelievable. Maybe I'll just have two muffler setups to run:rolleyes:

My immediate fix would have been to simply reweld the mufflers (better this time) and be on my way in no time.

Easy for you to say.:D I live in my reality. My welding looks like a pile of bird poo piled up half the time, and to drive around with two dirty busted up pieces of **** trying to find someone that wants to **** with that, on my schedule, that can also lay down the quality weld i expect ain't as easy as a skip down to the corner. And people don't weld for a ten spot either. So replacement mufflers it is.

I was just going to suggest Race Bullets! LOL. You wearing ear plugs? They toss a set in the bottom of the box!

I would listen to @VOETOM and do whatever he recommends. He has forgotten more about mufflers than most of us will ever know. Good friend to have!

Anyhow, anyone contemplating Ultraflo's sees what can happen. Really great sounding mufflers, I really liked them. Just didn't work for me this time. Could be a fluke, I'll eventually try the warranty route, and give em another go some day down the road. :)
