273 motor

-
Taking off the heads and inspecting the pistons for the telltale dome is the only way to identify a commando motor!

No HP 273's in 1968. 340 heads will fit but the block has to be notched so that the valves won't hit. 68 273's were low compression 2 barrel engines only.

weren't super commandos 383's or 440's only ?
Yes, I believe so but in name only. They were de-tuned 440's in 72,3,and 4. Dodge had the MAgnum and Plymouth had the super Commando in their 440. No "Super Commando's" for HP 273's for Plymouth. 65,66,and 67 were the only years for the 4 barrel 273.

Is your 68 273 original? Does it have a 4 barrel intake and carb? I have seen in the parts book that the Commando engine, Super Commando was the 383 in 68 Barracuda, was supposed to be available in 68, but have never heard of one in actuality. Find your casting numbers and dates on the block. 68 should have the VIN on the block along the bell housing mating line. I have put "72" 340 "J" heads on a 273 without notching the bores, But they were 1.88 small intake valve heads, the 273 block was bored .040, the heads were milled .040 and .038 on the intake side to get 65 cc chambers, I used offset dowels to center the chambers on the bores, used Felpro head gaskets, ran a stock "72" 340 cam and double roller timing chain, and checked everything 3 times to make sure I had clearance everywhere so nothing would go bump.
