Over the last week I have seen 3 complete engines, carbs down, left out in the weather , nothing covering them, they were complete good running engines the owner stated, when left to the elements! , 1 slant, 1 360 , and 1 poly 318! Pissed me off enough I decided against both cars. Both cars were plenty cheap, BUT...... Yes I have engines I could use, for each, but wow, just pissed me TFO!
 
I had a 318 that had water in it and was rusty like that.
Oddly enough, it ran great and we didn't know it was rusty until we changed the oil. Even drove it in the shop for the oil change.
 
I have a lot of respect for the /6.

Years ago when I was 19, daily driver 1974 Valiant.

Oil light came on, so I pulled over to check the dip stick.

Very low, & milky, a combination of oil & water.

The closest place only had oil for Marine outboard lower gear lube.

3 quarts bought & it still survived that way for months until I sold it to a guy for parts.

It still amazes me.

Usually the block is OK. I understand that drag racer teams purposely leave a new block out in the elements to age for a year (cast-iron relaxes or such), then final machine it. But entire slant engines are so cheap or free, no need to fool with it.

I’ve heard the myths about finding Hemi’s buried in the ground for that reason
 
They advertise Slick 50 on slants (and other solid lifter straight sixes) running with no oil or even pans. They are just idling, you can see the crank and rods slinging underneath all day.

Looks impressive, but really it's a scam, because everybody knows you can fill a slant with pond water and it would still rattle along down the road

Machinist for 30 years here...I can say 100% for a fact that metal DOES indeed relax.....many parts set to the side for a week or more before final machining....before and after measurements verify metals will settle and relax....

The original motor that was in Hoopty 10 years ago.. I had it running but man oh man did it smoke! Sat for 35 years

This is for real. The commercial on tv back in the '90's, when they pulled the pan and ran it with slick 50, it was a slant six

There was a guy selling slick 50 at Pomona thay would run this slant on propane and no oil. It would idle all day. That sludge slant is crazy. I expect something to start crawling in there. Nissan had a sludge prob as well as the mopar 2.4 v6. And there are guys here that still won't run PCV.

That's called "seasoning" a block.
 
Pennzoil non detergent oil?

I have to assume it was OEM oil.. as in original from the factory! I'm betting they just added... and added.. and added some more.

Under all of that oil, the motor was actually a bright yellow!
