I'm getting set to put a new high volume water pump in my 440, and the new pump has a paper gasket included.
I'm wondering if I should use permatex on both sides of the gasket, or just go with the plain paper gasket and no sealant? I've seen many different opinions on different sites but no clear answer. Opinions/advice? I'm not sure which way to go.

I contact cement to the removeable part. Depending what the gasket is sealing i will either grease other side or silicone.

I just replaced the water pump on my Hemi and put just a dab on both sides of the paper gasket to make sure of a good seal. Antifreeze leaking is such a pain. After I was done used my Rad pressure tester and no loss of pressure and a big sigh of relief.

Using RTV on a gasket will cause it to squirm when tightened and possibly cause a leak. There are exceptions, of course, such as using RTV around water passages on gaskets. Other than that, I would steer clear of RTV on gaskets. Maybe use something like 3M Yellow weatherstrip to hold them in place, but that's it.

Thanks for the replies, everyone. It looks like there are definitely two equal schools of thought on the subject everywhere, but I think I'm gonna err on the side of caution and go in dry. :)

Fel Pro makes a product called "Brush Tack" liquid gasket sealant -holy smokes does it stick on paper gaskets. Good stuff but it can be annoyingly sticky - just get the gasket positioned /oriented properly and it will do great!

Or a little Indian Head.

I use spray Permatex or Indian Head to keep gaskets in place. Silicone only where needed. I put the sticky sealer on the removable part. 3M weatherstrip works great too but it's tough to remove next time.

We used to use the red spray gasket sealer that mopar had. I now use a very thin finger applied layer of black rtv silicone on both sides. I just milled my water pump off the same amount as my engine plate and installed a new flowkooler hi volume pump, no leaks. I did use sealer on the pump to housing threads too, as they go into the water passage on a big block..

As you can see everybody has their own method for attacking the gasket question and it seems to work for everybody. You now have plenty of choices so pick one and do the job.

For cooling system I use the red/brown permatex and paper gasket. Only a little around the inside and then I also put it on the threads of the bolts. Water pump and housing

I also use Permatex gasket sealant - can w/ brush, gummy butyl rubber that cleans up w/ ethanol. If you put on both sides, the gasket can squirm out and tear. I also use it to coat bolt threads. For those w/ a small-block, test each bolt hole since some go into oil cavities, others water, and some are blind.

Versa chem gasket sealant
Silicone only if you dont have a gasket.
interesting twist here. I just re installed the water pump on my 440/505 yesterday, after a cam swap. I didn`t have pump to block gaskets so I made them. Used a gasket shipping box, 2 layers, thick, spray painted all sides of the 4 gaskets w/ ultra silver spray paint. 1ST time I`ve ever used it on paper gaskets.-------------Least of my worries, had a ***** of a time getting the timing cover on w/ a new piece of cork gasket underneath it where it meets the stud girdle. fingers crossed-----
