Chrysler started stamping partial VIN’s on the engine blocks in 1968. Others more knowledgeable about the 1968 details will chime in about exact timing but, from what I’ve read, it was hit and miss on if an assembly plant started at the beginning of the 68MY (August 1967) stamping the partial VIN’s or if it was part way through the 68MY on the engine blocks.

When someone advertises a “numbers matching” Mopar and it’s pre 1968 (or even an early build 1968MY) they are not being honest as there were no VIN numbers on the block or transmission matching the VIN. Prior to 1968 it was just a stamping date on the block, so as long as the block was cast prior to the build date of the car, that’s the only way to suspect it might still be the original engine.
