Header wrap??

Would like to lessen the underhood heat on my 72 dart w/headers. Anyone using header wrap?or paint on header coating?Both claim to reduce temp. Does it work ?? It is a 318/904 comb.
 
I have used the wrap before and found it did indeed reduce temps to the point I could grab the header right after shut down.

Paint/coat the wrap to keep water out of it. This will improve the headers longevity. Constantly wet wrap is bad.
 
I just installed some on my slant factory manifold on my van and it made a noticeable difference on the engine box in the cab.. I'd say money well spent.
 
I found some on Ebay from " USA in stock" 50ft roll for $13.95 for the titanium wrap. It will take 2 rolls for a set of headers I would think.
 
Three rolls or two and a half actually but obviously 3. I would pre-wrapped sections without cutting the roll and then make it a little bit longer and soak it in water and wrap that section and clamp it down. But I have a whole thread about this somewhere I just got done doing it less than 6 months ago.
 
Just went on e-bay/usa in stock site,and they recommend professional installation?? Is it that complicated??

I think almost everything says must be professionally installed so they don't have to warranty it if it wasn't professionally installed. But you even asking that question makes me question whether you can wrap the header. Do you see something there that looks difficult?
Okay I didn't read back but you are planning to have the headers completely out and wrap them like hanging from a hook from your garage in front of you correct? Lots of extra hose clamps? A sharp pair of scissors and a bucket of water. Three rolls not two and go for it.

My header heat has totally messed the dam stuff up. its coming off in big flakes when something touches it, and the glass hairs suck when getting them in ur arms, I HATE THE DAM STUFF !!

Watched a video on wrapping,does not look TO hard. Unfortunitly my headers are on the car now,making it a BIT harder to do.

Not in my case. Im in a pretty dry climate but what moisture are you refering to? Whenever you heat them up, the boil any moisture out. I didnt use water to put them on nor did I coat them, just a wrap with pipe clamps. It totally cooled the engine bay, as said you can almost touch them after a run and I had some pretty big surface area headers as fenderwells are huge radiators of heat. Especially around the M/C

I definitely like the idea of reducing temps under the hood but I think there is the potential for reducing header life by wrapping them. Ideally, stainless headers would be nice to wrap since they are stronger but I don't recall the expansion factor of steel vs. SS and how that would differ to the material that is used to wrap the headers. I would think the companies making the wrap would consider that, but ??.
There is a reason why wrapping headers usually voids a warranty and maybe if someone knew how to properly wrap the headers with the correct tightness, pattern, etc they could avoid failure or at least delay it and make it worthwhile.
When change of temp, condensation etc. begins it work on the steel and weaken it, I can imagine depending on the flexibility of the material and it's expansion factor quite a bit of stress from the wrap being applied inward around the pipes. As most know, wrapping something in that fashion even a few times can apply a great deal of friction to lift 1000's of pounds. Many I know say they will never wrap their headers again and swear by it. There is plenty of evidence out there that support their claims...and pictures too. Myself, I will trust a ceramic coating on steel and there are some good ones out there...or at least they claim to be. As much as I like the idea of wrap, I'm just not sold on it....for steel anyways.
I've heard of some sprays (silicone i believe) that can help with rust condensation issues but don't know much about it.

I just dropped my used and reworked 2" tti`s off at a coating place. He said the coating would take 2000 degrees, gonna be black . The headers were chrome when bought new by a guy in witchita, I unwrapped the wrap he had on them, and repaired some bashed in places, rewrapped them and installed them to make sure of the fit. That was about 6-7 yrs ago, they had started to rust , mostly the chrome looked like. Fingers crossed.

I've done a little research on my own after reading this thread and have read some positive experiences with the header wrap...so I suppose this might be one of those controversial topics with true believers on both sides. Maybe environmental factors come into play as well. Steel has a lifespan anyways. My headmans just split where the primaries cone together and they only have a few hours on them. I never coated them.

The company you are using, are they dipping them? spraying them inside and out? I might call around and see how much that cost. Hedmann said they will send me a new set...I'm glad I didn't wrap them as they wouldn't take them back...so at least I got that working for me :lol:

I HAVE BEEN TOLD, THAT WRAP IS SUPPOSED TO BE REPLACED EVERY YEAR OR SO ??????
I hate the dam stuff because of the glass that gets in ur arms when working down around it, and the flaking off when it gets old. But it does work ! For a while .
 
How much are these headers your wrapping? when I took my wrapped Supercomps out to sell them, they were not in bad shape at all. I think the wrap got a bad rap when motorcycles used them on 16000 RPM race bikes and the header would get so hot under the wrap that it would cause the pipes to break down and collapse. The wrap does not go on tight as it does not stretch at all, matter of fact its darn hard to even get it smooth. My wrap you could rotate on the pipe if you turned it. Im still using it off my turbo downpipe.
