Since I had my trany out while swapping motors I thought I would have it checked out by a local trany shop. I expected a clean bill of health but instead he called and said it was Toast.... seemed to shift well but I was having issues with kickdown. They said it would run 900 including a new Converter... this one only has a few hundred miles on it. He says it is contaminated from particles but I never noticed much debris in the fluid . In fact it always looked super clean.
Cant I just flush the converter ? It has a drain plug...

Make a surprise appearance and ask to see the guts. Ask him what exactly is burnt, warped, broke, etc.

Guy seems trust worthy enough and he runs a 10.5 Duster with a 904... thats why I used him. I was not looking to get it rebuilt but figured I would have him eyeball it since he is familiar with 904s.
I will go take a look at the carnage...lol

If what he says is accurate its a good thing I had him check it out.

I don't usually like surprises either but if you have metal shavings you need to completely rebuild to remove all of it. If you can't do this yourself then I think his price is reasonable. Ask about a guarantee.

900 is dirt cheap if that includes a converter. It's better to cut them apart and see what damage was done to the internals of the converter rather than just flushing it out.

A good street/strip converter is 8-900 bucks on its own.

This will be a 375ish hp cruiser with 3.55s...No need for super high converter.
The damage most likely occurred while this trany was behind my W2 Solid roller 360 in another car.
The thing is that since I installed it in the Barracuda along with the new 2500 stall TC.. I have dropped the pan twice and each time it was super clean....
I suspect that what he is telling me about the trany is true but I am hesitant to replace a converter with a few hundred miles on it.

I would agree....my trans guy charges 750 for a complete torqueflite rebuild ..........and converters, well you know what a good one costs......almost as much as a rebuild of trans

You are so right... I was thinking it is about time I learn to do a trany..... But at the same time I would like to just get this project done and driving again. My time off is scarce and I am tired of having the car sitting on Jackstands

yeah then I would pay the 900 and move on

Not to mention I have a 69 340 4sp Swinger to complete.

Painted my interior trim today.

Just an ounce of prevention for next time . It only costs a couple of bucks to put a magnet in the bottom of the pan . Most of what is in there is steel so magnetic , if you drop the pan and the magnet is covered in chunks you got a problem , if there's that super fine silvery paste well the trans does work by friction and your going to see some of that .

Did that...used a rare earth magnet.
