I have a 440 big block, can I use either a 1 or 3 bolt cam in it, or does the cam gear dictate which one to use.

Well the cam gear has to match the cam.....so the camshaft is the deciding factor.

single bolt for stock to medium performance, 3 bolt for higher performance higher revving applications. that's what i was told by my engine builder when i asked the same question.

The three bolt is needed for higher spring pressures.

From someone who had a freak bolt failure on a single bolt setup, I would never go with a single bolt again. They're ok to use if it is what you have, but if buying a cam and chain, I would always go with a 3-bolt.

That's Sprockets to you. Spacely Sprockets.

Off topic a little, but I bought a small Isky roller cam (R505-T) for a BB sight-unseen, and when it came in, it was single bolt. Also it was a cast core, so it needs no bronze intermediate shaft gear, perfect for the street. But how do you control the thrust, when a thrust button/roller would go where the central bolt is? I figured out a solution but haven't tried it yet. Thanks McMaster/Carr. LOL
