Temp. sensor baffled!!!

Hey all, new to the site and looking for info on what I need to get; building a 74 duster, putting in a 360 have an intake with a date of 3-6-87.. the thread for the temp sen. is like a coarse thread bought a sen. for a 87 engine, it seems to have the right thread but the probe that goes in the intake is to big won’t fit, bought one for a 74 engine, right size probe but the threads are fine thread!! Any help will be appreciated thanks...

Ran into a similar issue on mine the other day. Due to the guages I am installing I have to use their sender. In order to get it to work I had to go to Ace and get an adapter from the plumbing section. That's an option unless you are looking for factory correct appearance.
 
IIRC, the 70's factory temp sensors are 1/8 npt - that's National Pipe, tapered. Standard American pipe threads. A short 1/4 pipe nipple and a matching coupling would serve as a check.

You want to be a bit careful when adding adapters to a temp sender because it affects the sender reading more than you think it would.
I've seen them read up to 15 degrees cooler than the engine is just by adding one adapter.
The aftermarket senders for mechanical gauges don't seem to be as affected because they usually have a long tube that gets down in the coolant flow.
 
Thanks for pointing that out TB. I had to check pics of mine, I was pretty sure we used a brass one, sure enough.

1/8 NPT seems awful small, but pipe is measured ID, tube is measures OD. There are quite a few sender adapters out there due to one temp sender has to fit multiple apps.

Going to use the original mechanical guage, this is gonna be a driver nothing special.

The 70’s sensor came from class. Ind. the 80’s came from auto zone.

The second pic shows the size thread that fits, the temp sen. Probe is the size that fits.
 
The sensor go's between the two front intake bolts left side of your picture.

Your right, the one I had the bolt in bottoms out there’s one between the two intake bolts has threads and it has a valley pass the threads, THANKS, you helped me out!!!

??? There is no place in that photo for a sensor. The hole, I guess you figured out, is for mounting a bracket. OP? How about a photo looking down on the ENTIRE front of the intake?

In your previous photo, it almost looks like there's a tapping on the other side......but I can't see in the photo...........

Just for info, 1/8 US pipe is close to but not the same as 3/8 SAE fine bolt thread.
