Hey everyone .

I got my hand on a 1969 Swinger 340 4-speed and currently getting her back into shape. I have 3:23 gears in the 8 3/4 . I have heard that I would be happier with the performance with a gear change. Some guys told me 3:73 would be the perfect choice.
Any thoughts or experiences would be appreciated

Also looking for an original 340 4 speed shifter handle if there's one out here

Thanks and have a great day !

Welcome to FABO (and the coffee shop). You can start a wanted ad for your shifter handle. Let me know if you need help. toolmanmike

I liked my 3.23 gears behind my 340 4 speed 73 challenger, I would have liked a little taller gear at times
welcome aboard

You will be happiest with the gear set that suits YOUR driving style..............what is your first gear ratio?? Start there

70 Dart 340 4 speed had an open 3:23 dif, went with a 3:55 cone....WOW, very pleased! Search engine is your friend, many topics on this subject, sooo many.

welcome ... What was your Swinger equipped like ? What color ?
I am redoing one as well... R4 red .
your gears will depend one your engine build and driving conditions... if you are going stock engine and drive on freeways/hwy a lot than I would go no higher than 3.55.

I just put 40 hwy miles on my 68 fsstback with 3.55s this morning and anything higher would have been revving to much for my likes.

3.73's were my choice, but with a Passon 5 speed. Once you start going lower, you probably will need to address traction issues to really take advantage of the harder launches out of 1st.

Around town and on short freeway cruises they are nice, but any freeway travel time longer than 45 minutes or an hour gets to be too much.

3.55 with a sure grip would be a nice upgrade. Keep the tapered bearings and adjuster though. All my green strip bearings are noisier than stock.

Interesting ... I have a slight whir in my rear end using Green bearings and assumed it was pinion angle or gears.
