Line lock or leave as is?

Well I just went drag racing this weekend for the first time at the Nats with my Dart 4 speed car and I didn't have a line lock although I'll be putting one on soon. The first 3 passes I just did a 2nd gear burnout and when I started moving let off. That didn't do a long enough burnout to heat the tires up properly so on the 4th run I dumped the clutch in 2nd gear and then quickly hit the brake with my left foot to hold the car. Not ideal but it worked and I was able to get the tires hot enough. I didn't find that I needed to hold the brake at the line. I seemed to sit there just fine with my foot on the clutch and the gas.
