Hello
Is it save to put a 275/60/15 tyre on 8x15 steelies? I ask, because when i look at the charts of the tyre sellers, there is the widest tyre 245 for a 8“ rim. On the other side I‘ve seen here some members with 275 on 8“ rims. What do you think?
Thanks, Etor

Ok, thanks for the chart. So it should work well.

No offense, but personally I would never put a 295 tire on an 8" rim. I think the tire manufacturers should know what they're talking about by now. Put a GoPro on that, go for a ride and see how it looks.

The old rule of thumb used to be rim width should be within +/- 1/2" of the tread width. That's 13mm in Switzerland.

No offense taken, its not my car ! It doesn't look bad , a good bit of sidewall bulge though ...My b- body has 275/60 on 8.5" wheel...

with the calculator of toolmanmike its ok to put an 275 on a 7.5 to 9.5 rim.

The checking rim for a 275 is 275/25.4 x .7=7.58.

The problem with this is; it's a checking rim. If you install a 275 on a 7.5 it will measure 275mm, that's all it means. If you install a 275 on a 10 inch rim, it will not measure 275 anymore, perhaps closer to 300.

If you install a tire onto too-narrow a rim, the air pressure inside it will tend to pull the edges of the tiretread up off the road. And thus the treadwidth will not ALL be on the road...... which was the reason for installing the wide tires in the first place....right? So the solution might be to reduce the tire-pressure. And if the pressure has to be reduced too far, the car handles like crap in anything but a straightline.
Having said that, I ran 275/60s on 8.5s at a slightly reduced pressure, 28IIRC,and they aged well. The 50series not so much.
I imagine 275/60s on 8s will want about 24 to 27 psi, depending on the weight above them.
At 24psi, cornering gets frisky, watch for the rollover, don't panic...

I have 275/60 on a 7" wheel.
It drives fine.

At what pressure,
wait how old are you again?lol

I forget how old I am.
AJ I have run 18.5 44" tires on 10" for years with no issues, beating a poor old ramcharger to death in the mud.

Be nice AJ. We (we) used to do the same thing back when. L60-15's fit on 8 or 10" rims back then.
L60-14 MT indyprofiles worked fine on 6½" wheels, probably not right, but im still here and the car aswell.

Ya we did it too. 9 1/2" tread width is a real gamble on 6 1/2" wheels though.
