Diagnosing Distributor - No Spark Chase

Don't know the exact ohm rating for those but I'd bet Google does.

The distributor pigtail on the harness side when disconnected from the distributor exposes 1 of the metal contacts of the two prong plug.
Touch the exposed pin to ground with your key on and you should get 1 spark per touch to ground.
This tells you the box is probably ok.

So from my understanding I should put the ignition into the run state, then separate the rubber connectors between the distributor and the wiring harness. This will expose one metal male connector and the corresponding rubber female connector. I should tap the exposed male connector on the wiring harness to ground and expect a spark?

I tried this and didn't get any spark. I also noticed that the bolts holding the box to the sheet metal are jenky and a little stripped. If the box is not properly grounded will this prevent the pigtail from sparking? How can I convince myself that the box is actually grounded?
