That is me, kneeling down next to a jet car launching...

I hope you had ear plugs in...
Sure did. Think this was the second set of cars I was there for. If so this thing got about 100' out and had some sort of malfunction..chute came out...and sat there spinning down. Was extremely warm. Guy on the right chased down my hat.
Later in the night I was up on the roof of the timing tower. I am not afraid of heights...but don't like being on a roof. Long story. But it was pretty wild feeling the roof moving around...when I get to those shots I will post them.

If those turbine blades decide to exit the case you are done. You may want to move way forward and zoom in next time.

Have plenty of images from the front, off to the side. This is the only way to get ground level shots. With where I stand, about 70' from the tree I am at risk for damn near anything. I understand the risks...
I am actually behind the concrete barrier. May not look like it because of the angle the photographer was at. I was completely behind the barrier, with the camera aimed at the pre stage beam....

Any time you are near the starting line, you have high risk. That's why it's so fun to be there. Plus, it's the best place to watch a car if you actually want to see what is happening.

Thanks for sharing Doug, now let see some of your shots !!!

Irwindale Drag Strip, mid 70s, FC or TF show, Wheel Standers, ArmorAll Rocket car, the whole deal. One of the wheel standers, Richard Schroder's BossaNova, 70 vintage Nova, BBC in the back seat. Schroder had just sold the car this was the "new" owner's FIRST outing other than his licensing passes. Schroder is in the timing tower with the announcers giving the back story. Driver does his half track burnout and backs up into the lights to stage. Schroder gets on the PA "All of you photographers down there leaning over the guard rail, I suggest you back up a few steps and get ready to run. I built that car and I know what it is capable of."
