Oil filter plate leaks?

I'm chasing a bad leak on the filter adapter plate on my 360. Not using the 90 degree adapter just the plate.

How have you folks solved this stupid plate to block leak? I tried cork, rubber and the factory gasket all of them leak. I dont wanna use right stuff as it will be a major ***** to clean off if I ever need to remove it but i will if that's what it takes?

Also with just the plate do i use the small gasket around the part the filter threads on to under the plate?

Clean all the gaskets off of it and put the plate on the block without gaskets, how does it fit ? is there a bigger gap on the outside or the inside of the plate? or does it fit perfect, are the gaskets the same thickness?
 
The plate fits nice. Not sure what you mean by out side and inside?
 
There is a gasket around the outside and a gasket around the fitting that holds it to the block
 
My 2001 V6 Ram did the same thing. I finally used some ultra grey on the gaskets and all was good after that.
 
I only use the Fel-Pro gasket on this. It is thick and pretty rigid. With that said, I still use the MINIMAL amount of RTV. I can't remember the part# at the moment. Stay tuned.
 
Many are warped. A chap is selling iron 90 adapters for $35 here, they dont leak there.
 
The inside gasket goes under the plate correct?

I'll pull the plate (again) in the morning put it on the flat steel table and check just how inline the two surfaces are.
 
Don't use any RTV on oil pressure stuff. The block has to be surgically clean and all remnants of the old (outer perimeter) gasket removed. No grease or oil on them. The plate has to be flat, no oil or grease, and no traces of the old gasket. Make sure any scraping scars are polished out if you beat it up... Use the inner gasket, plus the perimeter gasket, torque it well, and it shouldn't leak. RTV is asking for a problem IMO.
 
Yes, larger dia. gasket between block and plate. I have taken many small blocks apart. Have not seen a gasket between oil filter thread and plate. Only seen gasket between bolt and adapter on the 90 degree deal.
 
Are you using a HV pump, Is there only 4 holes in the plate, Do not put a gasket around the inner center threaded stub or do not use that "3 spoked" provided Felpro gasket. With your application only the outer perimeter needs the gasket.
 
you dont want inner and outer flanges on the same plane, the inside needs to be deeper. If it bottoms out before the outer does, youll have no clamping force on the gasket. you can seet hat with a straight edge across the boss. If they are parallel, tap it with a hammer to make it recessed a bit.
 
I'll just pipe up in case you do some digging and you find my previous posts on this...are you sure it is the oil filter plate?

I chased my tail on this for months
One day I decided to do a test to see where the oil was coming from and I taped a shoprag around my filter (figured if I could pinpoint the problem, maybe, just maybe I could fix it)
Went for a spin and found oil on the OUTSIDE of my shoprag
Some more testdrives with cardboard and rags in odd places led me to find a leaking rear main seal
Oil would come out at the pan, travel back and hit the torque converter. The TQ would fling it up, it would land on the filter and "bam"...highest wet spot = spot of origen, right?

My point is, are you SURE it is the filter plate?
 
It's the plate. New engine. I have no inner fenders and can watch it leak with an inspection mirror.

I think I have the small gasket under the plate. I will pull it apart in the AM and respond after work.

Ya know what started this? Dam thing leaked after I removed the the 90 degree adapter. Everything I tried wouldn't stop the leak. Went nextdoor to my engine builder and asked him why it leaks, he walks over with the one gasket and tells me replace the gasket you f*** up..... I guess he does know his ****....

That's why I pay for engines to be built.....
 
someone said the magnums were flat and the LA's are not, cannot confirm but LAs dont get a gasket under the inner ring, only the outer and sometimes the gasket gets painted with the block so you think there is none and you add a second.
 
Pulled the filter and plate off and sure enough I had the little gasket around the center.... new gasket on just the outside and NO MORE LEAK!!

I dont even wanna say how long I've been chasing this leak....
