cooling not so cool

-
so got to tear down today. flushed the rad and it flows great. i don't believe that is part of this problem.pulled the t stat and it looked ok. I'm gonna test it to see if opening at temp and all the way but I'm also putting in the stewart components as suggested by YR in post #7 .

lower hose has no spring so ordering one to install.

Also took the pulleys off and measured them. It appears the water pump was being under driven. the pulley for the crank measures 6.5" and the water pump pulley measures 6 7/8". im gonna get a smaller pump pulley.

while all is out did a block flush. got great flow and the fluid in the block didn't look that bad. gonna pull the water pump tomorrow and see what i have there. guessing its a stocker so ill probably be putting in a 8 vane with backing plate.

My 340 always ran too hot for my liking so I removed the thermostat altogether. Ran ok for me. Now the 392 runs hot from the factory. Thermostat opens at 203f and the fans kick in at 225f. I changed all that to a 180f stat and programmed the fans to kick in at 190f. Runs much to my liking now.

Way back in the 80s my buddy had a cooling problem that had us scratching our heads. We did everything we could think of and nothing helped. Turned out his hi stall converter had too much slippage. Changed it out and it was cured. Yes, it was a tci street fighter converter. Kim

Chances are the radiator got painted up nice on the outside, but has 40 years worth of scaling and corrosion in the core. You will even see simetimes where they will still flow, but the buildup acts as an insulator and you coolant passes right on through the core without dissipating enough heat. Symptom will be slow increase in temp until overheating under long load, such as highway driving. My local radiator shop pulled the tanks and rodded the core for $80. Based on what you are describing, I believe rodding out your core will solve your issues.

440 with a 17"fan and stock 3 core style radiator, is that what you have?
No, 28x19 alum. crossflow w/ 1 1/4" tubes/2 row. Engine is offset like TTI recommends for their headers, 68 fastback/small engine bay. The 17" fan is above the top of the cooling fins, and I have it (shroud) built up for it. I`m not having a real bad cooling problem, but not as comfortable as I`d like. I received the hi flow thermostat like YR suggested yesterday, but haven`t put it in yet.
I have experimented w/ all kinds of fan set ups, and there hasn`t been a whole lot of diff. between 'most' of what I`ve tried. I haven`t tried the no thermostat thing yet, I had to do that on a 600 horse sbc I had, wound up w/ a plate w/ a 5/8" hole in it, worked good. I would rather run a thermostat for faster warm up-------------AND THE BEAT GOES ON-

The waterpump is an aluminium aftermarket piece, not a stocker.
Probably has a cast scroll impeller which I've learned don't live up to their hype.

tinkered around some more today. pulled water pump and its an aluminum 6 vane with backing plate. because i did the block flush with a calcium, rust remover with the pump in it im not chancing a leak at the seal. im gonna go with a 8 vane backing plate.

also checked both thermostats. the old one was good as it opened right at 180. the new stewart 180 has alot better flow opening. i see why its call high volume now. will use that one.

how about some pictures of your set up?

how about some pictures of your set up?

I have never figured out how to post pics on here, have tried what a couple of guys , (including joeychgo) suggested , but it doesn`t work on my p.c. I am almost a dumbass when it comes to this stuff. I have sent phone pics to my email address, but cant figure out how to send them to fabo from there !

Good to see the waterpump has regular vanes. I believe Mancini had(s) these usually.
440Source has the scrolltype impeller waterpumps that don't seem to flow as much as the vane-types do.

yeah, i seen that style and didn't care for it. got one at summit ,cast iron,8 vane. will see how long that lasts?

LOL. I figured out how to post a picture here. Once I figured it out it's not too bad.

Just click on the upload photos button under the reply widow. Select where you keep your pictures. Select them and close the window. Then upload them to the reply box and hit post reply.

If I can do it, anyone can do it.

I pulled the 8 vane out of mine and went w/ a flow kooler pump, It and the robertshaw type thermostat, and back to the belt driven fan have about got me fixed up . Drove it today and it ran 190 for a while , then up to 198, then 200, and cooled back down to 195 on the hi way going w/ a stiff tailwind, never got over 200*. Still doing a little air management in the front tho-------Most of what I`ve done was suggested by yellow rose, nothing was astounding , but all helped a little to the point I`m at now.
I did try to post some pics, but no cigar /again !

did you get that pump pulley smaller than the crank? got mine in the mail today. If i have to loose the clutch and go fixed i will. Don't care about the HP loss, just concerned about the increased fan noise. Because there were so many issues with my system i'm going to fix/replace all at once, fill it and then test drive. cant stand the piece by piece route. i guess if there was just one or two issues i would of tried one at a time? i think you need a new computer for those pictures. LOL
