Lets assume I've removed and lost my vin tag from the dash on my 1970 dart. Where else on the car would I find the vin number? and pictures would be helpful.

Fender tag will have the complete number, partial on the engine and or trans. On the rad support and the trunk lip.
Don't have any pics of the body stampings.

Couldn't find anything on the trunk lip, most likely its covered in paint and I'm 3 days from upholstery, can't be taking off paint. where about on the core support?

I'm not sure about the 70 but my 75 has it on the drivers side door.

If you can unbolt the passenger side fender it is stamped on the top of the inner fender lip where the fender bolts on.. All 1970 darts are stamped there.

re: the trunk lip. use a mirror and a light to look from the bottom side. when you find it, you can take a rubbing. think it's on the drivers side

Thanks, but I don't think unbolting a fender is an option, I'm 2 days from going to upholstery

So here's the deal, the vin tag and the data plate were removed during body and paint (not by me) and they're missing. The car goes out for upholstery Wednesday. So I'm trying to find a location on the car where the vin is stamped so the CHP can verify the legality of the car and issue me a CALIF "Blue vin" tag to replace the lost one. And if you looked at the picture you can see why I'm not about to start taking this car a part looking for vin numbers if I don't have to.

I've looked everywhere on the car where everyone has suggested and either the vin is buried in paint or it isn't there. I looked at a couple of cars at P-Town Good Guys yesterday day and they didn't have any stamping. One fellow was nice enough to take up his trunk rubber seal to look for the vin number and his trunk isn't stamped. I looked at several car in the sale lot and they didn't appear to be stamped either.

sorry. not trying to tick you off. i just went through doing the cali reg shuffle with my 68', so i know what a pain it can be. the trunk lip may be the only place your going to be able to get it with out taking something else apart. i had to lay in the trunk and look at the bottom of the lip to find it.
edit: i can get you a pic of the location tommorow

No, no, I'm not ticked off! I hear you but I'm trying real hard not to trash the paint if I don't have to. I know for a fact I do not have the vin stamped on: the package tray, the core support, or the cowl. If it is on the trunk lip, its buried in paint. I'm hoping I can find the stamping on the bottom side of the trunk lip.

The CHP makes a point; even though I have titled, registered car with current plates and tags, I can't prove that the they go with the car -- I can see their point. An officer is willing to work with me to get me a replacement vin tag. I've got the broadcast sheets, title, registration, owners hand book, and a build folder 6 inches thick, etc., so I hope I can convince CHP its my legal car.

yup, it's a pain. at least you have a vin on the body to tie the dash vin to. my 68' just has a sequence # that is also on the fender tag. i had a guy who verifies cars come to the house and do it.
if you do the trunk lip, it can possibly be done without messing up the paint. find the location from below and use a single edge razor to carefully cut the glue. you should be able to get it and re-glue the weather strip

Guy on here some time ago had a 68, someone had changed the dash. I forgot the details, but anyway it didn't have a proper VIN!!! And of course no way to "get" one

Why in the world would you put money in a car that is not in your name?
No VIN, run
There are only partial numbers on the rest of the car unless you have a build sheet.
You are now the proud owner of a parts car/stolen car.

I’ll bite my tongue, because evidently you haven’t read the entire post. I own the car, I have a clean title and it is registered with current plates. The body tag and vin tag were removed during the body and paint work and lost.
And, having read your post one more time, you’re an idiot.

No, he didn't read the post, is all. What does that make you ----the guy who lost the most important part of your car?
I didn’t loose the part, the people I paid to paint the car did. I was just trying to get information where I might look for vin numbers. Thank you for your constructive criticism. I guess not everyone is perfect as yourself.

It seems like the only idiot is the bodyperson who removed and lost the tag.

I would be ragging on that body shop, they can be held liable. Do you have the original engine?
if so, at least the last eight will be on the block, and transmission. The 70' challenger has a partial vin on the driver side cowl by the windshield squirter hose, where the hood rests.Maybe a Dart?
The partial vin is usually on the radiator support, if it has been repainted maybe the paint is thin on the underside. If you have to scratch paint, it beats not having legal ownership. not a good answer I know!

No, he is a fabulous body/paint guy- look at his body of work- who misplaced the tags. I don’t fault him, mistakes happen. Idiots are individuals who jump into posts without reading anything and then post foolish comments without knowing the facts.

If you’ve read the entire post, you’ll notice I’ve kept the body shop out of the conversation. He is a great guy, mistakes happen. What I’m trying to do is recover from the loss. If we have to cut paint, then we’ll cut paint . Just set the car on the ground here are some pictures . And thank you for your civil response .
