New cheap ebay steering box

-
165 for a 16:1 box? Go for it. Probably nothing Chinese in there except seals.

cheaper and lighter than stock... stock is aluminum this is cast iron? how does that work?
one part in the description says alum. the other cast iron. don't care about the chrome but as said $165 for a 16:1 is tempting

im gonna take a chance on it what the hell ive wasted more money on more frivolous things lol

Two year warranty for $27.50 ................

Did that cover your car after the box goes bunker buster on the freeway?

Steering and stopping are the two places you should not try to save money.

i figure someone has to take a look instead of everyone judging it before anyone has seen it in person

well had my dad over this afternoon (we both work second shift) as i was going thru adjusting valve lash on the 440, and saw a big usps truck pull up and to my surprise the steering box came today! never have i had a part from California come so fast! looked it over chrome looks decent, for weight id say its about the same as a stock manual box maybe a pound or two heavier ill have to see when i pull the old one this weekend, it is definitely cast iron or steel as a magnet sticks to it everywhere, feels like good quality tho... turning the steering side lock to lock its just a hair over 4 turns lock to lock so it may not be a "true" 16-1 ratio. only problem i may have with it is header clearance as my big block with tti headers is already very close to the stock one and who knows with tolerances if it will fit better or worse its definitely close, i should have time to pull the old one Sunday and report back how it goes!

well steering box is probably 5-6 lbs heavier than stock aluminum and with my big block and tti headers im running into clearance problems... in my car my headers were insanely close to the stock box so close i already had some dents for stock box and this boxes casting is slightly different... so id say if your clearances weren't super close you'd probably be fine in my case i may have to find another solution

might see if i can transfer the new gears to the old box... anybody have a how to on putting new gears in a box?

I agree with jos51700. I am not going to take a chance on a made in China garbage steering box.

Any chance you can post a side-by-side photo or two to show us the difference?

Yeah, the parts that fail are usually on the outside, and flaws aren't typically hidden by a thick layer of chrome plating. Go for it.

He's going to visually inspect it, you're good. He can tell if the metal surface hardness is up to spec, if there are any flaws in the in the castings or forgings (forgings? China? Yeah, probably). Ductility? Fracture Toughness? Fatigue strength? Crystalline structure? Alloy composition? Lubricant suitability?

No sweat. He'll look it over for thirty seconds, maybe even a minute before he slaps it in. It'll be fine. If it fails, he'll just pull over.

Besides, it's got a warranty!

Right?
