Working on a 1966 dart, has manual steering but inqant to switch to ps. I have a ps box but I'd like to have it rebuilt before I put it on. Has anyone ever rebuilt a box, what's all involved as for special tools, should I tackle it myself or send it out? I got a rebuild kit from NAPA. I've neve done one before. Should I just send it out? NAPA wants $125 plus shipping to send it to cardone to have it t rebuilt. The kit was $65 so am I better off having them rebuild it and just return the kit?
Your thoughts or experiences???
Thanks Rod

I tried to rebuild one once, ended up using as a core and exchange for a rebuilt box. I've heard experienced guys don't want to do them due to difficulty.

Personally, I would send it off to either Firm Feel or Steer and Gear and have them rebuilt it to their Stage III specs which is most like a modern car’s feel. Steer and Gear has done mine for my 65 Dart wagon (not yet installed).

I always rebuild mine, never a problem. You can youtube it to see if it's something you are up for.

65dsrtman. Do you have any contact information?

Since you’re in PA, I would send it to Steer and Gear in OH. Contact them at steerandgear.com

EDIT: shipping would be a killer sending it to Firm Feel out on the west coast that’s why I suggested Steer and Gear - much closer!

I also recommend Firm Feel, they can dial in just how much "feel" you want. I got Stage I because my P/S assist was too easy, no feel.

I called both gear and steer as well as firm feel. Both were around $460 with similar upgrades.
One requires a core and one doesn't. Both have a 2-4 week back log.
Going to think about that for a fee days. Cardone is around $125. All players require shipping as your responsibility. Probably around $100.
Not sure which direction I will take .

Heres the update, After buying the rebuild kit from napa at $57 and seeing alll the small gaskets and reading as much as I could about rebuilding the unit I decided to return the kit and I went with a steering box from steer and gear. The cost with hoses and fitting was about $400. They gave me a few different choices for what I was looking for and I went with their "sport" setup. I will install sometime this winter as that will be a major job seeing as the torsion bar and header will need to be removed in order to change out the box. I will also need to change out the shaft and coupling in the column as well. The only reason I choose steer and gear over firm feel was it was closer and saved in shipping cost.
